Before/After #3

Some more art revamping for print-- this section is probably going to see the most change (it was done after a long hiatus from the comic/art in general.) I didn't have solid reference for anyone other than Rask, which is why Oren's eyebrows evolve dramatically over about 10 pages and Sprig is all over the place.

I really wanted to bring the character design in line with the latter half of the comic, but also go back and make better use of space in some panels.

that's a nice composition effect, i wasn't sure where we were at with the story, it makes sense now, thanks for explaining it

Thanks! Yeah, it's intended. I don't think Sprig would feel comfortable standing so close to Rask yet, plus it's a better panel composition, reinforces an "us vs. them" feel.

this is great work -- the biggest change is in #6: in the old version had Sprig closer to Rask while the new version he's further away (and a bit shadowed by Egg's paw) -- may I ask if this is an intended change? Is Sprig not trusting Rask enough in this stage? Is he supposed to blur in the background?

ahahah you killed me with the Orens eyebrows comment...HEY thats what lured ME in look at them! *wheeeeze*

Thank you for the detailed reply, it answered a lot and shines a good light on your admirable devotion to quality. I loved the 2018 art and love the 2021 art also - your style just pops in a very pleasing way. Thank you also for mentioning Oren's evolving eyebrows, because I'll never be able to unsee that now ;) Keep up the good work.

I'm doubtful Oren's evolving eyebrows are what brought people to the comic, but who knows. ;] There's a few reasons to update the art-- foremost, I want to. These particular pages were done after a long hiatus from the comic (and art in general,) so just about every character looks different than they do for the remaining 100 pages after I found my stride. In print, where it will likely be read in one sitting, it would look really jarring if all the character designs/proportions changed for 10 pages. I'd rather the most cohesive version of the comic be the one that makes it to print. The ability to change things is one of the benefits of digital media-- and I change/reupload stuff all the time if I have the chance/desire to improve a panel, or if I forgot blood, scars, markings, etc. I've actually made a lot of separate revisions over the years and the version online is by no means the original. For instance, the first ~50 pages from 2015 pages I updated/reuploaded in 2017 (giving the characters more detailed noses/redrawing a bunch of panels for the French print edition.) And, if you want to see the very first version of the comic from 2013: https://www.patreon.com/posts/2013-draft-vs-35958971

Why change the past? It's what brought people here in the first place.

Seriously some major improvements, cool to see a side by side. Nicely done.
