Oren's Forge PG 171

(Patreon seems to be being really weird right now?? This was scheduled to post at 3pm per usual but it didn't and the site isn't loading. Woo.)

Hey! Sorry about skipping last week without warning. I took a few days off for my birthday since I was just mentally exhausted and didn't want to be stuck at my computer. Feeling better after disconnecting for a few days though, so ever onward we go!

Catching up on a few things-- Patreon art requests from September coming later this week!

lol "assistance" ...he saved your life lmao...and pretty much solo'd that boss mainly powered by rage from Sprig getting chomped... you just basically stole the win. She's sooo bloody arrogant...

I don't think Hemlock would do that. She already proved that on this page. If she would have that type or character, she would kill Rask instantly, right now, without even talking to him. She hates him as a danger, as a potential killer - that's why she simply don't want him here. For what he done for her, she is kinda fair with him: she wants him far away and it don't need to be "the other side" distance. About her hate towards Rask: remember the circumstances under which this world works; how animals sees it. Check page 138, second panel - the looks that other animals are giving to Rask as they are leaving. Remember what Sprig was talking about his past? How he felt at first when they took their revenge on first carnivore they captured - Egg? He understood something, he told "it felt ugly". But other animals may not think this way. Not yet. I'm not even sure if "ever". Others may hate Rask just like Hemlock, more or less or just with similiar power of this feeling. But Hemlock is kinda "battle type", she's expressing that more openly. If others would be more brave/self-confident, they would tell Rask to go away as well. Well, Hemlock's feeling is surely nearly or just pure 100% hate, i think that as for others it's mix or hate and fear, i just don't know the proportions. Things are a bit complicated by the fact that one feeling corelates with another and both are coming from reasons that are complementary to each other. And those reasons why Rask is feared and hated didn't came from nothing. Maybe not from Rask directly, but they see Rask as they see other predators - as fangs owner. If other predator will attack them, they will see that predator in Rask too. Some other marten do what he done and everyone (almost) will be afraid of Rask doing the same. The fact that that other marten is Rask's father is not helping. I would quote something that i find kinda fitting here (luckly i managed to find original eng version of quote), but i don't know if kind of
this
command is even possible here.

Nightwolf Starlight

If only she would do that, as it would expose her as a liar; not counting the numerous wounds inflicted on Rask and Yarrow by each other, there was also the other rabbit that Hemlock sent for help. They witnessed Rask first talking with Yarrow and then attack him after he killed Sprig. Not to mention Rask's own testimony to what happened as well as Hemlock's well-known hatred for him which would work against her.

Tygre13

Right, but hemlock might decide to tell Oren that Rask was in on killing sprig with his father.

Gato909

And where does hate lead?

Gato909

That's true, depends on how hard nosed she's going to be about this. There's another option and that's that she might tell Oren that Rask was in on this with his father.

Gato909

HAPPY BIRTHDAY my dude.

Chris Jones

Well, Happy Birthday to you! ^^ Also, I don't think Rask is gonna actually listen to Hemlock here, Oren said that Rask can stay, and Hemlock must've eaten some bad berries if she think's she can just push Rask away after he saved her skin. Plus, I don't think Oren's is to far away.

Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday, Teagan! I'm glad to hear that you feel better. About Hemlock... Yeah, i think it's kinda merciful, given the fact that it's Hemlock we're talking about. I think she believes/knows that Rask is involved in Sprig's death. Also he's carnivore - this isn't Zootopia or just modern age. It's a world where canivores eats to survive. They eat meat. Hemlock is made of "meat". The end. She's a dinner for them. That's how this world is going - Egg, Rask and Quanac were the first known carnivores that started to wonder about this and thinking if there's another way, to live together without eating someone equal to them (known to a few prey animals of Stone Hollow and us, the readers - no one else), although Quanac still thought that some herbivores were partially animals. Mentally of course. He believed that porcupines are unable to lie, he said that on one of first pages. Other carnivores probably thought that prey animals, especially small ones, are as mindless as fishes or insects. Without being aware of itself, of that "me" part of mind. Although i'm not even sure of that - carnovores were living by eating prey for so long that they don't think that there's some other way than this. After all, they had their mates and cubs to feed as well, they had their own families. Aware or not, that doesn't matter for them as long as they can keep themselves and their pack/loved ones alive. Hemlock seems to be aware to at least part of that - that carnivores will always need to eat, and that meat will always be "in their menu", because there's no other way than this, in her opinion. That part when Quanac wonders himself about mental abilities of prey species kinda reminds me of The Amber Spyglass - third book of His Dark Materials trilogy - where, in one of first chapters, there's mentioned that arctic foxes learnt some of (probably) human language, they were eavesdropping others, but their brains were made in way that let them understand only those sentences that were built in present tense. Also they usually were telling lies.

I am suddenly reminded of Yoda Fear turns to anger, anger turns to hate...

Well, now that we've established the definition of mercy as "To expel an undesired stranger rather than murdering them due to a once in a generation moment of heroism." we'll have to concede Hemlock has a point.

Tru7h

She may know mercy, but this is not. It's barely less cruel than killing him outright, and he knows how bad loneliness can be. He won't go back to it... If only he could make her understand that, I'm sure it's something she could relate to. (Right now let's just hope Oren comes back in time to get him out of this mess.)

Reseen Dalls

I mean, she's not unreasonable but I wish things would end a bit more happily. I mean I get the feeling this is not gonna end well. I figured Daddy was gonna end poorly but I mean, it's all very sad.

BC

Too bad for her that it isn't her call. Oren gave Rask sanctuary and Oren is in charge, and killing Oren is most likely the only way Hemlock will take over. So unless she's willing to take the route of outright murder (which I honestly wouldn't put beyond her at this point due to her ability to justify anything to herself), her lot is to either follow orders whether or not she likes them or leave Stone Hollow. Just my two cents.

Tygre13

Happy birthday! Oren will come in next page I think.

sansanik

"Run away and never return." Well, I guess she trusts him well enough to let him go and not tell anybody about that place. Still, it's a super dick move on her part.
