He's talking about post-family-murder hemlock who thinks she's invulnerable and can take on any predator.
She's being humbled right now.

To be fair if they've all got spears and aren't half bad with them they could possibly get away with half that many or less.
Long pointy sticks are incredibly effective weapons, simple, easy to manufacture and provide an incredible reach advantage.

Yeah he's... in a hell of a hole and it's partially his own fault through his, understandable, hesitation to attack his dad.
But while he might not be able to convince Hemlock, even if he does save her life, it'll be better than the others walking in on him as the sole survivor.

True. Once prey start producing weapons, it's just a matter of attrition and eventually all predators will be exterminated. It doesn't matter if a wolf can kill 10 rabbits, there are more than 10 rabbits, and only takes one good spear stab to kill a wolf.

that is what it appeared to me. Sadly I think Hemlock was just trying to spear the first available carnivore. I think Yarrow actually pushed Rask out of getting a proper backstab.

I mean, maybe Rask could help? I'm not sure that would change her worldview, but he can't just stand by and do nothing because surely his father's rampage will be laid on him should he survive.

'ehhhh I'd disagree about the spear thing.
Largely because there's probably a lot more 'easy meals' coming and they'll *all* have spears. At which point it stops being single combat and however much of a badass Yarrow is... it'll end badly for him.

I think a lot of them like the IDEA of having the spears. They like the IDEA of the power to fight back. But, they struggle when it has to go beyond a mere idea and become a reality.

Yeah that's the impression I get, too.
Hemlock and the others in the forge have only recently started using the spears for protection. The concept of fighting and defending themselves is still quite new.
Yarrow by comparison has spent his entire lifetime learning, hunting, fighting and killing to survive. To him, Hemlock is just another rabbit, an easy meal - a very eccentric meal, of course - but an easy one nonetheless. The spear really is just a silly stick to him.
This is a good example that the spears are not some all powerful thing that will instantly make life better. Predators still have the edge since chasing, fighting and violence is a core part of how they live. It'll take a lot more time and practice before anyone in the forge can be a genuine threat to a predator in upfront combat.

I still say he was kicking rask out of the way of the spear cause Hemlock was trying to spear them both.

That's probably a bit too technical for a society that has just about figured out how to stick pointy metal things on the end of sticks.

In the first panel Hemlock shows her lack of Experience and skill with the spear. she is holding the spear wrong. she has reduced her reach and control, and lowered her mechanical advantage with the spear on the wrong side of her body for the hand hold she is using. if she were to move her right hand grip to the back of the spear she would have a much stronger position for using the weapon with her current stance. she would also gain a lot more reach with minimal loss in control and mechanical advantage.

Here's kinda the best comparison I can think of making: Hemlock is a local karate blackbelt who has done really well and won some entry-level competitions. She's definitely competent and sure of herself.
Yarrow is a professional MMA fighter. Maybe not the biggest and badest out there but he's been on the circuit for years. Fighting is his job, not his hobby.

I don't think she missed so much as he dodged. He's better at thinking on his feet in a fight: he's been through more. His fighting reflexes are naturally going to be better than hers.

Rask is going to have to take the spear and kill Yarrow. Think we will get to see the spearhead come out of his chest shortly.

I didn't expect Hemlock to make short work of Yarrow, but wow! That's a lot of action packed into a few frames and even fewer seconds of time for these adversaries. Great job of keeping this intense, Teagan.

Still this is interesting, as much as part of me wanted Hemlock to handily win, this is more gripping.
Rask and Hemlock have both seriously 'eff'd up. Rask let Yarrow kill Sprig, started fighting Yarrow too late and then got kicked into the way of a spear.
Hemlock attacked before help could arrive, wounded Rask and let Yarrow get past the speartip. and in close.
So now the ball is back in Rask's court, is he going to compound his 'eff'up by refusing to help Hemlock or worse, helping finish her off? Or is he going to jam that spearhead into Yarrow's back before he can get his teeth into Hemlock's neck? (Which has the added bonus of keeping blood off of his teeth.)

Probably would've gotten bit in the face if she didn't let go of the spear so fast and shove his chest.
Still, very much a mistake on her part to miss like that, she's in a bad situation right now and he's not going to be confused by having her hat in his teeth forever.

Oh man, Yarrow's gonna taunt her, saying that she's "Not a real predator", she's just meek prey wearing a pelt, and now he's gonna kill her like one. Honestly, that's gotta be harsher than any physical harm that Yarrow could put her through, Disarming her and exposing her for what she is.

... agression is key to fighting. Her mistake is not being aggressive *enough* and letting him take initiative.
She needs to turn this around, claw out his eyes, bite etc, being unaggressive right now is the worst possible move.

Why this doesn't surprise me.
Hemlock has never faced a real predator, otherwise she'd know how dangerous they are. And she's way too aggressive. Now Rask, you've got to save her.
