Oren’s Forge, Where We’re Going

For what it’s worth…

[WARNING: There’s nothing specifically SPOILERY ahead, but I’m going to say something tonal about Oren’s Forge. If you don’t want ANY sort of hint as to what’s coming, stop reading!]

We’ve all probably been having rough weeks, on top of rough months, in what has arguably been a very rough year.

Personally, I oscillate between being “okay” and functional, to feeling like a caged animal screaming into the void.

I spoke to a few friends recently about it. They also have that same angry-sad, hopeless despair tinging everything. It’s a struggle to talk about, I think, because trying to fit this immense, intangible weight into words, art, or 140 characters just doesn’t contain it.

I’ve been debating on saying this for awhile. I want to let readers be unbiased or unprepared, since I hate even tiny spoilers… (!—stop now if you’re like me—!)

However, after trying to talk to people about this, I realize how universal and exhausting the sad-ache of 2020 is. We’re all a little bruised right now and don’t necessarily need to have more misery heaped on without reason. So, I just want to say one thing about Oren’s Forge.

Some STUFF is definitely going to happen— but I promise you, the story doesn’t end in a grim-dark, scorched earth kind of gut punch where no one wins and you’re just sad. I love those kind of stories, don’t get me wrong— but… right now, with everything going on… I don’t want anyone to be afraid of how this story ends. I promise, I won’t do you dirty (this time).

I can’t say everything will be magically okay but I’m proud of the ending and remember: it’s always darkest before the dawn.

how many books we will have at all?

sansanik

This has been a very good read and I hate to see it come to a close so soon, but look forward to more!

Amethysmus

Not super soon! There's still 20-30 pages left, and an epilogue that will set up a second book. :]

How many more pages can we expect? You make it sound like its ending soon D:

The tone of the story was pretty much stated in the very first pages, and it had stayed constant since then (realistic, harsh, questioning/deep but also never nihilistic, with a powerful trail of hope and decency shining through) so I doubt anyone will be scared off or worse. They know what they signed for and it's clear from what we have seen from your comments and patreon that you're a very nice person, so I doubt anyone will run away. And personally I'm a fan of 40K so I don't risk being shaken by your work. ;) Just remember to relax, find good times whenever you can and stay healthy in body and mind.

You said it was like an end soon. Good luck and all the best in life!

I don't want spoilers, but I can gather from the tone of some of what I read. I'll just say this: this comic is heartbreaking in many ways and I love it for that just honest take on how hard life can be. I am rooting for people, but I know that life isn't fair. I would never hold it against you for not giving us a 'happy' ending as long as you tell the story you want to tell and give us a 'good' ending as far as story telling goes. When I first read this comic I had no idea you'd have given up on page 77, when I got to that page Rask was being drowned. What a cliffhanger. I'll be honest, if the comic had ended there, it would have been a very nihilistic and dark ending, but honestly if Rask had died there, it would have been very honest and realistic. Sometimes people just die senselessly. I hope you just get to tell the story how you want to, I hope I am able to enjoy it regardless of the fallout.

Yay! Keep on trekkin'!

I've watched a number of comics come to a close. Some of the best ones ended with the semi-realistic tone where the characters are left with at best a partial victory. I will say a few have been heartbreaking, but when done right and faithfully to the story and characters it makes such an ending that much better. I think the rest of you readers can handle it.

I appreciate the sentiment. Thanks for the encouraging words!
