oh man i hate this part, why sprig, why?! What where you even doing there?? It's certainly an effective way to make a reader feel the brutality in this their world. The characters that had died prior to sprig haven't been characters that we've gotten to know, their deaths have been the showing and telling of how brutal life is for them, Sprig's death is the emotional gut punch that hits us reading. Sprig was the friend rask could turn to, and we were there from the start and followed along the journey until it got to that point. Which is why i think i understand why sprig is the one who has to dies here. That doesn't make me feel any better about it, and i wish it could've played out differently, but its part of the story, part of the world

So I had this terrible realization, normally all these victims of Yarrow would immediately know to be on guard and escape from the mere presence of a Marten. Obviously Martens have the ability to hunt and catch prey, but i'm wondering if a moments hesitation on their part would just doom them. So prey animals become aware or accustom to Rask as a non-immediate threat Marten. Sure maybe they don't trust him, but they're at least aware he's around a not necessarily a immediate threat. So their natural defenses against Martens are now delayed, dulled, confused. Maybe they see or smell Yarrow, but don't immediately react because let's face it, not only do Martens probably look similar to other species, but there is going to be a family resemblance that confuses the situation even more. Now to the audience we can see the differences between them, but we have the luxury of time, for the prey it would have to be a split section decision to flee. So in some very real way I worry that Rask may have been inadvertently a contributing factor to their deaths, even if only because his mere presence muddies the water of predator detection.

Can't really say anything aside from what's already been said, but holy shit p.q I admit I sorta saw it coming, given Sprig was pretty much Rask's only believer on the prey side, but god damn it stings. Really excited to see where this'll go.

Gulp, thanks for that reminder of how horrible nature his. Poor, poor Spring (at least he didn't seem to blame Rask in his last moments, and the marten gave him a bit of solace at the end). And now Hemlock will be so satisfied by feeling confirmed and we'll want Rask so dead... I wonder if anyone we'll manage to plead Rask's case well enough that at least some other members of the expedition will be okay with him staying (I don't want him to leave, it's in this group he'd bring us the best story developments!). And Wait! A lost prey friend, the stashing tactic they talked about... what if Rask, in honoring his lost friend, invented the first burial ceremony? And what a proof of dedication it would be, to have so much meat at hand and choosing to let it turn to dirt by respect for the departed one!

So yeah, I knew whatever was coming wasn't going to be good. But I figured it would revolve around Yarrow getting killed. But now, there's a new little thing my mind cooked up that brings me satisfaction: "I hate those pathetic sounds," Yarrow said disdainfully. "Ah well!" he said, his tone turning happy again as he turned to his son, "We have been presented with a veritible feast with this place! Come on Rask, lets-" His words stopped suddenly as he felt the air leave his lungs and a dull, cold feeling seeped into his chest. He looked into Rask's eyes, his face only inches from his own, and was met with confusion. With more effort than it should have taken, he looked down and saw the strange stick from before; the one he had taken from the chipmunk. Only now, it was held in Rask's powerful grip while the other end of it was buried deeply in his own chest between his ribs. Slowly, he raised his head to look back at Rask, unable to speak but the confused expression on his face asking, "Why?" Tears streamed from Rask's eyes, not only from what he had just witnessed but also from what he had just done. He spoke softly, his voice filled with grief. "He was my friend."
