I'm glad you see it the same way, I'm just seeing people be defensive of Rask, and that's natural I think in a narrative. And who knows which direction the characters will take in the end, but either way I love that the stressful nature of this dynamic is playing out. Nobody wants to die, let alone of starvation or being eaten alive. This is a cruel world and I think this push and pull of life and death is a great theme to explore, and this is a great way to deal with a rather grim subject. Hemlock is doing what she sees best to protect the things she cares about, and like I've said before we have no idea of the horrible things she experienced to gain this worldview. That being said Hemlock could just be a mean person, but often in life things are never so cut and dry.

To be honest, I don't think we'll see hemlock as a villain in the longer run of the story. Sure, as you said, she's an antagonist, but it 's a long way from being antagonistic about someone or something to actually becoming malevolently evil about it. The tragedy of the Oren's Forge world is exactly what you stated above; you can't blame either side for what they do, or what they are, from either point of view.

Love it, and it's why to see degree I don't think Hemlock is a villain. Maybe the antagonist, but not yet the villain. We relate to Rask, and maybe he has as much right to kill to survive as the prey with their 'teeth' have to kill him to survive... And maybe at the end of the day, the wolverines had the right to kill the Martin's for being dumb slow prey. If all these animals are sentient in this way, then this is a very grim situation. Ultimately I think it'd be hard for Rask to not at some level 'dehumanize' (for a lack of a better term) his prey simply to avoid going mad from the guilt about what he must do to survive. And growing up in a tribe which must do the same, can we blame him? And if this is the reality, can we blame hemlock ?

Sprig's got a point there, though I'm not sure I read his attitude right at the end of page 110 ._. Nice to see you don't shy away from Rask's previous life. Not that you hadn't shown blood before, but I wasn't sure whether we'd get to see ... well ... this side of him. Quite the wake-up call. Poor little mouse dude though ^^;
