2024-10-24 14:22:17 +0000 UTCI was taught way back in school that the War of 1812 was yes, basically The American Revolution Part II, confirming our independence from Britain who wanted to reconquer us. (And we didn't know why Canada wasn't on our side.) I also remember from then a historian saying about the War of 1812, that before it "the United States were" (used as a plural noun) but after it "the United States was/is" .... On another note, when I started researching my family history as an adult, and learned that my ancestors were loyalists who left the country after the Revolutionary War and stayed in Canada until around 1900, I began to see the War from both sides, and realized that yes, Jefferson and Washington and Franklin were traitors (Samuel Adams was possibly even a *terrorist*?) who *should* have been executed for treason if they didn't win the war, and I realized I likely would have been a loyalist too!

2024-10-20 03:04:28 +0000 UTCI'm primarily (90%) an English teacher but sometimes I teach Western History (mostly US) in China and it's an interesting endeavor. Private schools will, for the most part, leave you alone, but, public schools are another matter. In a nutshell, individual greatness is watered down in favor of group accomplishments.
