Butterfly Manticore

Butterfly Manticore:

Habitat: Mountainous regions, high coastal cliffs, they like areas with wind and storms.

Danger rating: Moderate

Size relative to human: human size

Butterfly manticores are not true manticores, but their feline appearance combined with their gliding wings has lent to the adoption of their common name. Like quillcats they have an interior opposable talon on their feet and they live most of their lives clinging to cliff surfaces and rocky spires. Their fur is a rich blue color with black and cream patterning and dark stripes.

Butterfly manticores are strong and quick, but less durable than some other species due to their light-weight skeletal structure. Their wings lack muscle strength and are much too small to enable proper flight. Instead the appendages have little claws along the leading edge that grip the manticore’s primary arms to lend strength and rigidity to the appendage and allowing her to glide for long distances.

They hunt from above, swooping down to snatch up prey with their sharp talons, or the anchor like spike that juts from the tip of their powerful tails. This spike is also used to anchor them to rock surfaces when sleeping, or in the face of high winds that threaten to carry their lightweight form from their high perches. In emergencies they can fire this heavy spike at supersonic speeds, but unlike quillcats they take some time before they can regrow the weapon. 

Butterfly manticores usually live alone, coming together only seldom they hunt over large territories and do not take kindly to interlopers in their domains, they are uncommon, but cause trouble for livestock farmers in mountainous regions. They are famed for sinking ships with their tailspike shots as they are attracted to the gulls and other birds that gather around vessels close to shore.
