(Ad Free) Ubuntu on Mac - plus I'd love your feedback!

Hey all!

I'm making some behind-the-scenes changes, and I'd love to know what you think.

Specifically, I'm now working with an editor whose work I really love and respect. His name is Diceroll, and not only does he have a ton of experience, a keen eye for pacing and storytelling, and a strong interest in tech - but he's also a super nice guy.

This has freed me up to do more actual work on projects, plus it's really cool to see a project I've filmed through a different "lens" so-to-speak. Even from just this first video together, I feel excited and inspired to film and build in a whole new way.

I'm really curious what you think about our first effort, and to hear your opinions and critiques.

A big goal of mine is to not only create content that you all will enjoy, but also create content that can bring new people into our hobby. Inspire people to tinker with an old computer instead of taking it to Best Buy and chucking it into the ewaste bin.

Draw 'em in with jank, and next thing they know, they're at a VCF :)

I’ll definitely add that the extra sound fx for the graphics are too much, as are the 3d text effects that pop up when you’re talking about the computer. I don’t mind the specs text, actually kind of think that’s a great addition. Maybe add a background to make it stand out more. The cuts are too jarring, maybe cut back a little on those..though..you are ACTION retro and it does feel very action movie-ish 🤣

Thank you!

Thank you!

This is extremely helpful feedback, thank you! I think we will find a sweet spot that adds to the videos without taking away from them elsewhere.

Appreciate this comment!

Thank you! My thought with this and the next one or two videos is to let Diceroll implement what he sees in the video, and then see what works and doesn't work. To that end, your comment here is really helpful - I think going back to the editor and saying something like "let's dial down effects 30%" could help us find a sweet spot.

This is very helpful still!

I think the editing is good. I like the addition of text for specs (for example).

"a bit much" was my initial thought. I guess that is a personal preference though. It felt very hectic.

Production values almost a bit too high (hard to believe, right?) I agree with those that say to tone it down a bit with the transitions and filters. And probably not related to the edits, but what was that horrible reflection on the laptop screen near the end? As for content - I'm wondering if you have had success with other distros besides Ubuntu, which I am not a fan of for various reasons.

"Apple really knew what they were doing in the 2010s" at least until 2015 maybe. There was whatever the 2015 MacBook was, the atrocity that was the Butterfly keyboard, shoving i9s into a half-inch chassis... Honestly, they were kind of floundering until Apple Silicon let them eat their silent cooling cake and have it too.

Can't wait to watch this one. I just acquired a 2014 MacBook Air with a puny 4 gigs of RAM and am contemplating which OS to run on it. I guess I have lunch plans now 😎

It's really exciting that you'll have more time free to do more janky ridiculousness!

Man, what did you do? I liked you how you were. You don't need all this music and flash-bang-pop to distract us from the main message, which is do terrible things with computers and stuff, and make it work. Creativity is the message. No bling please.

I felt dizzy at first, as if the first minute was trying to spin me around the room. I was worried in the usual old-timey-punker way: "What's next, ya gonna count off 5-6-7-8 and do the cha-cha? We count off 1-2-3-4 just like Jello taught us or go back to the suburbs." Then I kept watching. I like the text with the specs, since I usually have to rewind that a couple times. I like the text in line with the picture as well because font love is one love. I didn't like the fade to black then sudden up. That sounds so flippin' whiny. That said: you already had a clear verbal transition, so the visual one looks overdone. It's a drum fill when the chord change did the job. The quokka was up just the right amount of time, too. It's a little faster and shinier, but it's still worth watching. You still performed some chaotic good on a machine that I have one of (from Sweden, so Nordic keyboard no less) and my wife has another. It gave me ideas. A challenge for next time: use a FireWire 800 device for the install media! Lemme know if you need to borrow one. Synchronous data transfer!

I enjoy the new style. The cutaways add some life to it. Although the text on the bottom of the screen is a bit too much I feel. That would be more fitting for short form content. Otherwise, loving it.

Kudos for getting help with the parts of production you don’t love so you can concentrate on what you do love. Of course, we, your fans, are used to your style, so this is going to be a little different. That’s said, the critique I have read so far from other patrons feels like it’s on the mark. I think you and your editor can find a way to lean into your established style while letting your new editor polish things without feeling like a departure from what you have established.

I guess the text could also be made a bit thicker instead of adding a shadow or outline, this was an issue I noticed while I was watching the video vertically on my phone

slendi

Ok these are going to be my unfiltered thoughts: I find the music in the intro part a bit loud, don't really understand the point of the transitions in and out of the intro video. The flickering on the laptop is also a bit distracting. Bloom could also be toned town a bit. There's also lots of cuts and motion, I preferred the more static style, after watching the first 2 minutes it started for me personally to be a bit eeky. At 0:50, the text on the orange rectangle is a bit hard to read so it could use something like a shadow or a border, and in general those rectangles could look a bit better. I personally don't mind the 3D text, but I don't understand the point of subtitling your words. When showing the specs, maybe a black gradient to transparent would work from the left side of the video. The pacing is fine not much to say about it, can be a bit fast on some parts of the video but overall fine. I think the editor is fine and can make great videos for this channel, just needs to tone it down a bit.

slendi

A bit of sensory overload… the on-screen text doesn’t add a lot of value, and the rapid-fire changes from one view/shot to another are rather distracting.

Appreciate this!

Yikes, Diceroll needs to chill with the filters and the text on screen. And the music in the opening was distracting. I get what he's trying to do, but it's kinda offputting when the shenanigans stand just fine on their own. Basically, he seems to have the right idea, but he needs to dial it down because right now the editing's kinda distracting and drawing attention to itself. ED: Got a bit further, I'd say he also needs to chill with all the cuts to zoom in and out. Every so often for emphasis can be funny, but I feel like I'm about to get motion sick.

Joy Buchanan

The new style is pretty nice, but does kind of stray away from what we are used to watching. Maybe a little less text on the screen?
