My apologies for the lack of updates this month, I’ve been feeling like a coward most of the time. BUT I ditched client work today and painted some stuff, yay!

this is a digital painting I worked on last month but the original file AND ITS FOLDER suddenly vanished from existence and I had to paint everything again. I love photoshop. It was a study of a photo, I wanted to focus on finding a clean process of painting the trees and leaves. I also had Ghibli trees and that red building from Spirited Away in my mind while I was painting, I’m thinking of turning it into fanart?

Yesterday I tried painting with gouache for the first time and I’m so embarrassed of the result, but here I am stepping my fragile artist ego to share this wonderful flop. It’s honestly been so long since I failed this hard at a painting, but this only tells me that I have been staying too long in my artsy comfort zone.
One major problem that I faced when using this paint was not being able to show light and shadow until eventually turning everything into a mush. Controlling the paint and how light or dark it was so difficult even when I prepared my palette in advance. But I decided to try again today.

This time I decided to plan my process better, which was a difficult thing already because I’m ✨spontaneous✨ . I choose a simpler subject, just a hill with some clouds. Then I paid attention to the shapes in my initial sketch, because the biggest mistake I did in the first painting was putting down scribbles and hoping that it will magically sort itself. Another thing I did was to put my shadow shapes in the sketch so I could just fill them in easily. I also put mr.pelican for emotional support.

I used much thicker paint which kind of gave me more control. The result is still not what I hoped for but like, I can sleep at night now. I’m not in love with the shapes of the brush strokes, but this was fun!!
Thank you so much and always. Please take care 💖💖💖
