Innocent Devil’s Harem Ch. 139

December 17, 2023

NOTE: Hope you enjoy!

Next week will be a chapter of Combat Healer (early Christmas present, lol), and then the following two weeks 'may' be this story again, as I need to do more plotting for Combat Healer and I'm not sure when I'll have the time (due to end of December being very busy).

FEEDBACK: Thoughts?

We've kind of got an interesting dichotomy going on here with these Claire and Lyla type characters.

The overall reaction to Lyla in Combat Healer has been both similar and different to how everyone has reacted to Claire in IDH, although one big difference is that Lyla isn't exactly a backstabber, so much as someone who just misunderstood Allister (but she never would go around making up false rumors about him).

Thoughts on how Gwen feels? Think she'll change her mind eventually?

Well, first sentence should be "Gwen would definitely burn you alive if you wouldn't resurrect."

Arnim Sommer

in my humble opinion taking the kind of author you are, I’d say yes Gwen through interactions with Claire will eventually chang3 her opinion of Claire

dfontana59

Well I love the stories and all the characters Claire and Layla included I think that Claire might develop into a solid member of the team. I was thinking of what an army they would be all together Elizabeth gets a new body but what happens when they split questions upon. Questions he needs a place to hold the increasing teammates

Robert Crews

Chris has it exactly right.

So much happening so much of the past part of me thinks thar Kai just had a Trance Gemini moment from Andromeda when she went from purple trace to gold. With all the memories flooding in the allies that had been unknown. How the harem order keeps changing I feel sorry for Gabby but im sure like many things that can be seen in the rear view this will all work out.

KW may correct me, but I think it comes down Gwen and Serenity being the two original women who saved him in each of his lives. Serenity fiercely fought for him after the adoptive parental units passed on. She kept him out of the foster system and gave him a home when he had no one else. Talking to Elizabeth around chapter 101 he said something along the lines of "If I have to spend the rest of my life taking care of her and protecting her it's the least I can do because when I had nothing and no one else cared she saved me." Gwen came into his life after ONE THOUSAND YEARS of cursed torment and and her love gave him the means and motivation to conquer his curse. Both of them literally saved him and made everything else in this story possible

Christopher Miller

*I quickly corrected her, "Avery and Natalie saved you, with my help." Shouldn't that be "Avery, Rosa, Natalie and the rest of the girls saved you, with my help." Rosa specifically was crucial to saving the day. But all the others were instrumental to ensuring everyone survived. Did Kai omit Rosa and the others because he was trying to not overwhelm Claire? Especially by not drawing attention to Rosa with her freaky red eyes? It seems like it would be better to let Claire know everyone there had a hand in saving her?

Christopher Miller

If Kai is cursed to be unhappy, will he always experience some good with a lot of bad? It seems like he will never fully be happy. And it's crazy how he can give up everyone except Gwen and Serenity. I thought his bond with Nat was very strong also. And it does seem some of the bonds he was trying to build early have been put in the background. Like his first girlfriend... They don't get much time together. Even though she kinda set off this whole thing.

Lyla - she's in a world where lives are constantly on the line, she thought the MC's ego was writing cheques he couldn't cash, she though the MC looked down on her (which he did a little), she had to hide her unique talent due to abuse and saw her value as higher because of that, and age joined the ground by being dominated by the MC's other nature and the group accepted her because of the MC and respects her utility, though I think more should be written to make it have more sense for her to be part of the group. With Claire lives weren't on the line and she was constantly backstabbing her best friend not out of necessary or survival which grates against the definition of loyalty, there is nothing keeping Gwen and Claire on good terms. Gwen is often the main support to the group and often plays peacekeeper to new members and she's a core member that only puts up with Claire due to civility and because those she loves accepts her (albeit to varying degrees), Claire's friend will have to play the peacekeeping role this time because it's unlikely that Gwen will take the lead to include her and she's more likely to keep an eye on Claire and shield others from Claire. Claire is scared of Gwen and I would imagine Gwen would happily keep that dynamic with Claire so that Gwen holds the dominant position in that dynamic. I doubt Gwen will come around unless there's a history where Claire's was tortured for many years and betrayed countless times so that behaving the way she did is a second nature and I'm not sure that is the case given the dialog between her and the MC but in very interested in hearing more of Claire's historical backstory as it seems the phoenix would rather have avoided the MC all together, I'm wondering if she'll be a betrayer or sacrificed pawn as the plot develops but being a phoenix I would think she would be important so it might be more that she's was caught in between the MC and another major power.

Moi465

The core value meaning with Gwen's being loyalty would make her reaction pretty natural though, keep in mind that Claire pretty much spat in the face of that definition and it involved people that were strongly bonded with Gwen. Just because they're over looking Claire's history doesn't mean it doesn't grate against Gwen who probably doesn't even understand why everyone is helping her but is anyway because the people she loves is looking past it and Gwen has not only held a foundational protective role, she's also been the main peace keeper and pretty much negotiated most of the communications between new members and the group.

Moi465

Fair point about the rarity unless he's a hybrid too, you're right though, the skin color seems to come from the imp side and like you said the imps didn't have telepathy.

Moi465

I personally don't think the investigator is a mind reading inferno imp. Gwen, as KW reminded us in this chapter, was unique among her people. Her talents were so unheard of and special that it was deemed a royal secret. He probably is an oni, or another supernatural race with gifts that would make him a good enforcer or bodyguard. Just my opinion though.

Christopher Miller

Interesting, I thought it had been at least several weeks if not months given the sheer amount of things that have been covered. I'm not sure I can quite comprehend it even being physically possible for everything to happen in just 7 days.

Adam B

Like I said, kinda overkill but adequate reasoning for it. When characters have enough of a personality I can see the conflicting view points easily, and that’s a good job you’ve done on building each character so far despite how little or how much is given for each. You’ve made each character no matter how small the role they had seem unique which allows me to see the different POV’s.

Pedro Comenda

Well, she's not 'being mean' to Claire, and has in fact been very helpful, even despite how she feels (such as by 'kindly' tipping off Serenity as to why Claire was freaked out so much). It's the idea of being intimate with Claire that she is strongly against (or the idea of actually being friends with her in any way).

Good catch! I fixed it!

Each book as been approximately 1 day (the exception being book 1, which starts on Thursday, as well as I think book 7? which sort of summarized Wed through Sat). So the story started on a Thursday evening, and the first few books cover the weekend. Then we've had a full week of Monday - Friday (skipping school on Monday and Tuesday, and then going to school on Wednesday, meeting Mrs. Monroe, and then summarizing Thursday and Friday leading up to meeting his father on Saturday). Then we have the 'big event' of meeting his real family on Saturday, which happens around Chapter 100, followed by meeting up with Rachel/Joseph on Sunday, going back to school on Monday (and Claire getting hurt), and now we are around that point. It's been 9 books up to this point, and we've covered about 11 full days (summarizing/skipping 2 of them), which is obviously a pace of about one day per book (per 15 chapters).

Author Kaizer Wolf

Between a couple of days and two weeks at most, I think.

Pedro Comenda

On one hand Gwen’s reaction is kind of over kill, on the other seeing things from her point of view, completely validated. Hard to decide which hand to lean on this one.

Pedro Comenda

"they showed up a little at 3 PM" little after 3?

Puggan Se

I'm sure Gwen will come around eventually *if* Claire consistently demonstrates remorse and actual intent to change. I don't actually see that much similarity between Claire and Lyla. Lyla simply has an unpleasant demeanor and rubs everyone the wrong way. Claire is generally agreeable to interact with (to her face, anyway), but lacks integrity. She lets her emotions control her actions without moral principles keeping her in check. Not that she can't turn over a new leaf, but it's a different and more serious problem than Lyla, and will take a long time or extreme circumstances to demonstrate convincingly that she's changed. Corrections: I’d impregnant Michelle and Avery too, impregnant -> impregnate We had just began began -> begun

Tejing

Well, that's awkward, are we to assume the big fella is a mind reading imp like Gwen? That would be quite the incoming brown storm if he is. I reckon a bit of conflict within the group is pretty good, Gwen and Claire being a similar element I wondered if they would be in the same "thought circles" but that might take a while. Solid chapter again. Part of me was hoping that Dante would turn into a enemy and used the situation to gain power which wouldn't make sense unless you consider that vamps have a different perspective on time to most, that the MC had been to that relm before and the little Italian vamp is genuinely young and easy to manipulate. Dante seems like he would make a pretty decent enemy.

Moi465

Man so much happens in weeks of chapters I forget it's only been days another awesome chapter

SovietDegendays

I also really enjoyed the epiphany moments with Gwen and the other teases with the Investigation crew, Gwen's mom, and the looming visits with Rachel, Laura, Dante, Roland and Evelyn.

Christopher Miller

I loved Claire's reactions to learning the truth about everything. And Gwen's reaction to Claire were also grounded in who she is as a person. I'm guessing to get rid of the tension and awkwardness that instead of staying at Miriam's mansion Kai will be reverting to his original Plan A and house her at Tracy's place?

Christopher Miller

How much time has passed in the story since the first chapter of IDH?
