Podreon - When is Queer Coding Okay?

Nick and I talk a bit about the history of queer coding, why it was so important to queer culture, and how it still might be valid today.

Podreon - When is Queer Coding Okay?

I think also when it comes to this conversation, asexuality as a queer identity HAS to be considered. Because I do think there is a school of thought that goes, "if they don't fuck on screen it's just queer coding/queer baiting" and I *get* that, I get how that comes from so much media being afraid to depict the raw physicalty of queerness, to just do sexless relationships onscreen while the straights get to be horny. (thank you interview with the vampire for NOT doing that) ... however, not all queer relationships have the same end goals, and there are some couples not interested in sex and such. Not all asexuals are 100 percent disinterested in sex, of course (I'm not), but that is the reality for some. i think it's kind of like what you briefly touched upon with the "if it had been a woman answering the door, everyone would have assumed it's his wife" i think true equality will be when we don't HAVE to show the obvious for people to get that they're queer.

This definitely has the potential to be a video! I love hearing about shows & movies that I'm not familiar with that have queer content, to whatever extent. The series that is my guilty pleasure is Sherlock, but I mainly partake of it thru fanfic. I'll never forgive Moffat and Gatiss for the queerbaiting they did with the show, which was especially galling since Gatiss is openly gay, but acts like making Holmes & Watson gay would be sacrilege. The subtext is in the books! But I digress...
