patreon

So this is interesting.

So I've been informed by YouTube that The History of the Queer Panic Defence can be monetized after all. After telling me absolutely not, they've changed their mind. Gay Crime, well that's still a big no no. But the video about queer people being murdered? Actually, that's fine!

I'm not making the video public, because I know so so many of you joined my Patreon just to see it. And that would be incredibly unfair. I just wanted to point out youtube's... Very weird change of heart.

So this is interesting.

I may have joined your patreon the day you posted the video but I’d been mean to join already your videos are always fantastic. It’s an important video and it’s very informative. It would not bother me in the slightest if you made it public.

This is so fucked up, but sadly not surprising at all. And from my pov, I don't mind if you post it on Youtube, if I joined your Patreon was to show you some support <3

I would like to add my voice to the "make it public" crowd

I'm totally okay with you making it public. I paid to get access to at a point in time where it wasn't and I got that (and it's a great video, harrowing as it is). It's an important video too, so it would probably be good for more to see. I find this idea that if someone paid something for something then it's unfair that someone else get's it cheaper (or free) later. It's a very sad way of thinking. Especially with Patreon since here we aren't technically paying for stuff even, but to support. If anything: I hope that my contribution to Patreon will make it more possible to for you make more videos public (all other Patreons I support have everything they make public). That being said, I totally understand if you don't feel you have enough on Patreon to do that yet.

I've been a patron for a long while so I've got no dog in this race but like many others here I think if you're comfortable making this video public you should. Maybe do a patreon poll, just to make it "officially" OK?

We concur, make it public. We here on Patreon are here to support YOU first and foremost. Getting extras, ah, that's secondary at best. You've got some of the most beautifully made and well thought out videos that it would be a shame to hide any of that light under a bushel ;) Continue educating the world, we're sticking around to matter what <3

I echo what everyone is saying here. I love that your instinct is to be fair, but I think sharing this content is also wildly important. Could you perhaps run a poll or something similar to get a gauge of more than just the comments here?

Joining all the patrons who say they joined to watch it to please feel free to make it public if you wish. After realizing I leave in an area where the queer panic defense is still legal, it's something I want to see more people have the chance to talk about.

Personally I would not mind at all if you made it public. I would not feel that it was unfair in the slightest. It's an important issue, and I would want it to reach as wide an audience as possible.

Youtube remains as shitty and contradictory as ever.... But also please do post publically if you want! You've more than earned that right. (Also, while I did originally join the patreon for the video, I fully forgot to watch it. This has been good reminder!)

Helen Hughes

Please make it public. It is important to educate the public. I did join your Patron to see it, and I increased my tier after watching 'BeGay do Crime' because I believe what you have to say is important for people to hear - please release so others can find it

Very strange indeed =o At least the money will be going to a good cause! 🥳

YouTube doubling down on "family values" I see 🙄

If you want to make it public, I honestly feel that is fine and your prerogative. Given the information it contains and the necessity of more people knowing about these issues, making it public might be the right thing to do. I’ve seen it suggested that some people say wait for a short while and then release it, to give your Patrons something for their monthly donations. That also sounds like a good idea. However, I feel that the real purpose of this post is you more or less getting contacted by Youtube that instead of “2+2=4,” they have just told you “2+2=-i*e” and you are begging us to help you understand and we just can’t either with how Youtube thinks/works/decides it wants the monies. 🙄😫🤦‍♀️

Courtney Rayle

I joined for the video mainly, planning to stick around for a while at least, but in my opinion you might just give it a month or so, if you *want* to release it? People would have still paid for early access and all.

marsbie

…huh.. (also I’ve been a patron long before that video and I will be long after, so I don’t mind if you decide to make it public, I think it should be out there for everyone)

I didn't even attempt to monetize that one.

Definitely make it public if you want!! That's such an unbelievably random standard that YouTube is holding you to

Julia Rittenberg

Did the same thing happen with the preview video of the Queer Panic Defense?

Victor Reyes

please feel free to make it public! it deserves to be seen, it's such a moving work
