Wow...
Added 2020-10-09 16:39:53 +0000 UTCWow there's a whole lot more of you now! haha
You guys are... amazing. I can't even put it into words how your support has lifted me up. I've decided I am going to keep making video essays, plus some other content to try and offset YouTube's dickeshness. A weekly podcast is going to be coming this week on YouTube, iTunes, and Spotify. They'll be released each Wednesday, but you guys will be getting a link to them on Mondays.
So I wanted to ask, do you guys think I should switch the billing period from monthly to only when a video essay is released (Pretty sure I can do that)? I mostly do one a month, but sometimes it takes 5 or 6 weeks, so I wouldn't want anyone to feel like they're not getting their money's worth.

I'm happy to keep supporting you monthly, even if videos take longer than a month! That's what I signed up for and that's what you deserve. I'm not just paying for the individual videos, I'm paying to support you and all of the work you're putting in. What you're doing is important. It's taught me, and others, so much, and it catalogues important parts of Queer history in the media. But as long as I have the funds, I'll keep supporting you here regardless!
2020-10-11 18:50:58 +0000 UTCWhatever helps you better to keep going with your awesome work :)
2020-10-10 13:10:37 +0000 UTCI'm pretty sure Patreon allows you to offer both, so people can choose. My preference is for per-video, because I'd want to support that impetus. I'd probably go $10 per essay, vs $2 per month,. But looking at the poll I'm in the minority on this.
2020-10-10 11:29:39 +0000 UTCI'm ambivalent. I support you to support the work you're doing. I know very well the need to maintain or count on some regular monthly cash flow. Do whatever you feel you need to do in order to keep making awesome content.

2020-10-09 21:41:54 +0000 UTCEchoing the above, do it however feels right to you. I certainly don't mind backing you every month even if video essays don't come out exactly on that schedule. We assume that the work you're doing is constant so why shouldn't our backing be constant as well. Hopefully having the added security or continuing to have the security of a regular monthly amount coming in is more helpful to/comfortable for you and then knowing you don't get paid until you get the next piece out, which I'm sure works for some people, but also seems to me like it would be an added stressor that nobody needs. 💚💚👌👌

2020-10-09 18:37:17 +0000 UTCMonthly! A huge part of why we're Patreons is because we want to support your creative process! We need more people making great, deeply thoughtful content like yours!
2020-10-09 17:54:48 +0000 UTCAmen! I'm one of the people who just joined - and I'm here because I want to support you making this really thoughtful, interesting content. You've got my backing either way, but I came in assuming I'd be backing you monthly, video or not!

2020-10-09 17:37:41 +0000 UTCThe way I see it, I’d still pay monthly if you only put out a video every year. So long as you’re making content I enjoy, whatever that content is, I’ll support it financially (as long and as much as I’m able). To me, Patreon feels like a) I’m voluntarily paying for the work you do, and b) I’m supporting you as much as I am buying your work. I want to see you keep creating as long as it makes you happy, and I’m trying to make it as easy as possible for you to do that. Until my family bought a family plan and I was roped into it, I refused to use Apple Music, or any other music streaming service—I wanted to financially support the artists firsthand. The same goes for your content—I don’t *have* to pay for it, but I want to show my support in a way that actually has some kind of impact. My monthly $5 on its own probably wouldn’t make video essays any more financially realistic for you, but it’s better than doing nothing at all. So yeah. Choose whatever you want—as always, I don’t want to force you to make a decision you’re not comfortable with. But I’m gonna vote for “monthly” because I’m voluntarily giving you my money, and I *want* to support you as much as I can. And $5 every month is doable for me at the moment, which it hasn’t been in the past. I’m excited to have the ability to support folks whose content I enjoy!

2020-10-09 17:36:58 +0000 UTCAs others have said, we're not paying for content. We're paying YOU, because you're making content we enjoy.

2020-10-09 17:16:43 +0000 UTCI agree that this isn't just a purchase of the content, but supporting a creator and what they stand for! Keeping it monthly sounds fair :)
2020-10-09 16:55:17 +0000 UTCIt would feel cheap, to me, if I only paid when you put out content. Regardless of what you decide though, I'll be staying.
2020-10-09 16:55:16 +0000 UTCThe way I see it, we aren't patrons just when videos come out but to throw our support behind your content creation, no matter how long it takes. :)
2020-10-09 16:53:29 +0000 UTCI agree that monthly makes sense, even if it takes a little longer. I don't think I'm alone in recognizing how much work you put into you videos. It's not surprising that it can take a little extra time.
