I Had to Take Down My Last Video. Here's Why

Perhaps this is a bit silly, but I wanted to promote the re-upload of the Solos video and draw attention to Youtube's awful blur tool all in one go.

I Had to Take Down My Last Video. Here's Why I Had to Take Down My Last Video. Here's Why

Och. Stupid Youtube. Stupid Google. *shakes fist* Get off our law... erm sorry, didn't mean to go into grouchy old man mode.

Allan Clipperton-Boyer

Replace tool? Psh. We're not allowed such luxuries

Aging Wheels

Well, since you've edited and uploaded this, I'm gonna assume the tornado didn't send you to Oz. Does the replace tool not work on Youtube? Could you have blurred the number in your editor, then replaced the video? (I haven't uploaded a YT video in oh, shit. 7 years. 🤣

Allan Clipperton-Boyer

I definitely thought about using this and putting a Google voice phone number on the car that would lead to a special voicemail, but I decided against it. If I let that Google Voice number lapse, I'd be right back to having a real person's phone number on prominent display in a video

Aging Wheels

Man, that sucks and really weird people would start calling a random number they see in an unrelated video.

Misha Dellinger

Responsible-minded and honest people are harder and harder to find. Took this as an occasion to upgrade my patreon level.

thedeafguitarist

This is such a wild story! I noticed the phone number a couple of times in the original video and I also totally assumed it belonged to the company. It sucks that youtube's terrible tools forced you into a re-upload but it sounds like you're making it into an opportunity. Can't wait for the new version!

Jennifer Holz

No, there's nothing else you can place over a video

Aging Wheels

Can you place anything else after the fact like text or something? It won’t look as good as blur but you could put a bunch of text over the bad spots. If you wanted to save the original video

Evan Hartmann

Have you tried using safari?

Evan Hartmann

No, the editor operates in frame resolution. Thirty frames per second

Aging Wheels

It's just ONE of the issues you showed, but you keep talking about 'frames' where the blur should end but the editor start/stop time only has 'seconds' resolution and not 'frame' resolution. So I was wondering if this might be a part of the problem, that when your blur ends at 18:15 and your playhead is at 18:15.22 that you don't see the blur where you expect it. Or even that the blur end only displays the seconds value, but internally can also store a higher resolution, depending on where you clicked in the video. I heard other creators also complain about the blur tool. You'd think that Google employs enough smart engineers to be able to fix this :-)

Michiel Beijen

Thanks for including direct links in posts. Patreon videos don't work well in the app and they took away/broke opening videos externally, again.

Kadah

The ad part is super unclear as of yet. I left it as is for now

Aging Wheels

Hate you had to deal with this - but kudos to you for your commitment to doing the right thing for the guy who owns the phone number, and thank you for going above and beyond for us. As much as they need creators for their, y'know, business model ... you'd expect YouTube to do a little more to make your work w/ their tools less frustrating.

H. V. Fisher

I'll watch you microwave a Factor meal. A re-upload with new jokes? Count me in.

Robert Sanges

No, you're not^^

Marc Weinreich

If you open Chrome’s dev tools and go to the Console tab, does any thing show up when you try to save and it errors?

Josh Bernstein

Yeah I didn’t even think to call it. I did go to that URL though.

Josh Bernstein

The biggest tech companies all write the worst software. Nobody cares about quality or if they do they can't actually do it because some PM tells them that they have to do something else instead so someone can get a promotion for a "big customer win" on a dumb new feature

Stormcrash

Darn. Write to Linus Media Group and see if they can talk to their YouTube rep (assuming you don't have one of course), to help get this resolved.

Minecraft Chest1

Clearly I am not the only one then.

Minecraft Chest1

This is good information in case I ever upload a video that's too hot for YouTube

Nick Elrod

Damn. But anxiety would have kept me up too. You did the right thing. I will try to generate some extra views for the new video :)

Johannes

That sums it up pretty well. Some of the scene transitions were so jarring it took me a minute to figure out what was going on

Aging Wheels

Yeah my biggest complaint is the editing. Wouldn't be surprised to learn there was an extra hour cut out, but also there a few regular cuts that just didn't work well.

PerfectlyAdequate

I went home to add blurs before the movie started. Then I saw it the next day, and it was great! I think I like the first one a bit more though. The story in part two felt a little too condensed and scattered.

Aging Wheels

Okay but how did you like Dune 2?

PerfectlyAdequate

Those sirens must've been a test because nothing happened. Like at all

Aging Wheels

I tried it. It did not work

Aging Wheels

I saw it but didn't think to Google it. I also thought it was a business phone number. Oh well! Good on you for wanting to do right by a stranger. Hopefully the tornado sirens were nothing too exciting.

Nick Hernandez

🤣 You had me hooked at "blur"

Rory Jackson

I'm not sure if you maybe tried it, and I know you showed the example of the editor not processing with two blurs added, but I'm curious if doing each blur one at a time would be successful.

Gabe Wohlers

Wait there was a phone number? Apparently I have no perception skills
