Small things! Next up is batteries and then all the wiring.

I work in the EV industry and I reached out to my contact at a well known connector manufacturer that works in the EV space. I’ll let you know what I hear.

Jeremy Whaling

I'm on the patreon names list! I'm a celebrity now!

So, take everything I'm putting in here with a grain of salt since I'm probably getting some things wrong but I work on a university project that converts trucks to electric and integrates pantograph system for on the road charging. 1. We do not fuse the motor/battery connections, because the inverter/drive unit and/or the BMS takes care of monitoring and disconnecting in case of overloads 2. Our HV-PDU doesn't have a singular battery connector but rather gives each battery pack its own connector so the load is better distributed and packs can be individually disconnected. In tandem with this we use high amp contactors that then switch the power inside a box to different bus bars/outputs 3. If information is correct on what I can find on the Tesla drive units, their peak power and continuous power are quite far apart. While they will do 450hp each, I assume it's only for a short time before melty melty, so a connector wouldn't have to be laid out for 1200 amp continuous per motor but maybe 100? I don't know. The Amphenol Surlok series goes up to 300A, is simple to use and mount and quite cheap comparatively. 4. Please get an additional high voltage safety monitoring system so in case you have a HV interlock failure or a rubbed through cable your HV system will turn itself off

Check with Zack from JRE, he is finishing up the HummEV, and can probably direct you to the connectors. OR the guy he's working with ... Electric super car (https://www.youtube.com/@ElectricSuperCar) EDIT: https://www.mouser.ca/c/connectors/automotive-connectors/

Yeah, I'd get with AEM or the guy working on Jerryrigs hummer and see what they've got to say. I'm sure they'll be able to help!

Matt Govero

Yep, it'll peak at 1900 amps at the pack voltage of 355. Part of the problem is the relatively low pack voltage. Because each module is 60v, adding one more module in series means I'll exceed max operating voltage of 450v when fully charged

I've never been jumpscared by a power steering pump before

Cole Lepper

Heck, contacting AEM and see what they have to say would be helpful too I'm sure!

Matt Govero

I'm so fascinated by this project. I can't wait to see you complete it!

That connector is an issue, you're sure it's 2000A at pack voltage? I would talk to the guy who's working on Jerryrigs Hummer EV conversion. See if he could help you at all!

Matt Govero

Great progress.

If it makes you feel better I have pla as an adapter for my led headlights in my engine bay and no warping well over a year later
