As I said in the thing, all of this info is subject to change, but these are the plans as of now

Updates! And Special Secret Project!

Comments

Hey from your previous life you could also make an electronic dashboard for all these EV projects using Android Auto. Right?

Michael McCormack

I agree with you. I'd like to, eventually, make the F150 full electric with a range extender, but that's substantially more work than "just" a hybrid. Regardless, project with the pickup are at least a year out so I have plenty of time to think it over

Aging Wheels

So happy to hear that the Explorer will be destroyed for a good cause and not just for the heck of it :-) great projects!!!! If you‘d like to hear my impression: focus on the explorer and the bus, and not so much on the hybrid F150. Of course that‘s also a good idea, but making the two drivetrains work together might be more work than warranted compared to how great the other projects can turn out.

More videos, short or long, I'll always watch!

Fair enough. I'm not wholly on board with the electrify everything program you seem to have but that F-150 absolutely deserves it, since the original drivetrain is such a hassle. Not taking anything away from the world, it's not rare or even uncommon. That and the Explorer is already junk so why not have some fun with it?

I...don't know what to say. You always spoke of the kid as if they were yours. Lots of step-parents don't do that.

This is why, along with the Explorer, I pitched Tesla swapping the F-150. But it was agreed I should start with something that can be quickly hacked together rather than start right out the gate with a refined EV conversion that would take much longer to sort out. That said, at the merest hint of failure that truck's getting electrified (with a range extender)

Aging Wheels

Valid, except he's not my kid. I was just acting stepfather

I joined your patreon after your mental health video. Just because your kid doesn't live with you doesn't mean you don't have a kid to give the gokart to. You're still their dad.

Now I'm curious, why will the VINWiki thing never air? What was it about? Also, I don't think anyone would mind shorter videos from you. For the record your era of F150s does have one of the least serviceable engines ever designed, you're supposed to remove the cab to do basically any work to it and the mounts fail after 1 or 2 services. Not to mention that you are right in the danger zone of the high thread plugs that like to break off inside cylinders heads and need a special tool to remove, which is why companies like Express, NTB, QuickLane, etc refuse to service them. Oh, and the coils are well known for repetitive failure as well, they get overheated where they are positioned. Good luck!

wow looking forward to seeing the ford build sounds amazing, as a EV nut, also hope your EV fleet gets mended soon but as someone who took apart there 2012 Renault Twizy to fit a tow bar in 2019 and its still in bits, tow bar works though used it to tow my Zoe when i ran out of battery on the track to my house something comical about a 17hp micro car towing a 3311 lbs EV up a dirt track hill and managing it

A '99 Ford Explorer seems like a perfect vehicle for Aging Wheels, I don't see why you'd lose any audience over it. Bodging EV tech into also seems a good fit. Looking forward to seeing what you get up to next, regardless!

Omg, just got around to watching this and I had a Lada 2107 and learned to fix cars on it.

Turning the F-150 into a hybrid sounds like a horrible idea - and so it's perfect for your channel! Making an electric bus with Tesla drive units and a range extender sounds like another outrageous idea - and so it's also perfect for your channel. Using a beater Ford Exploder for a test bed likewise ... In all seriousness though, you're proposing three big projects that will each require a lot of engineering, fabricating, fitting, trouble-shooting, and other sorting out that will become apparent along the way. I share your enthusiasm, but I'm concerned that you may be getting waaay over-extended trying to pull off any one of them, much less all of them along with the various other projects that you mentioned. Entire YT channels and shops are dedicated to this sort of work, and projects of this scale take them many months to complete. To me, the bus sounds the most feasible simply because you'll have more room to install the various components. One of the many big challenges with any sort of vehicle engine swap type project is packaging - where do components have to go, and what will it take to make them fit. The bus has more room to work and less stuff that you'll have to remove and undo just to make the new bits fit. I realize that this is your full-time job and that you're receiving outside assistance, but I'd recommend putting the F-150 on hold until the bus is basically done. I'd also suggest reconsidering how much effort that you'll have to put into the Exploder simply to use it as a proof of concept. Regardless, I'm happy to see that you've got stuff that you're excited to be working on. Carry on!

I am also very excited to see the results of these amazing projects. I wish I could help, EV conversions did not bring me to your channel, but they do keep me here. Old stuff is quirky of course, but the raw power of electric vehicles and the prospect of them taking over are wonderful.
