Kid Sensation: Emancipated
Added 2023-12-22 01:50:57 +0000 UTCI seem to recall George R.R. Martin mentioning a number of years ago that a Game of Thrones fan asked him for something like a glossary of High Valyrian so that they could study the grammar, syntax, etc. GRRM gave a humorous response along the lines of, "I've written maybe seven words of High Valyrian..." Basically, GRRM hadn't actually created the language, so he wasn't able to help.
It's not exactly the same, but I received a question about the Kid Sensation universe that I hadn't fully contemplated: When is Jim's family - meaning his mother and grandparents - coming back? (Apparently Nightmare and Indigo have fans...who knew?)
In all honesty, I'm not sure. I mean, they won't be gone forever, but they have a lot of catching up to do. Bearing that in mind, I'd argue that it will be a while - but that was seemingly hinted at when Jim was partially emancipated. However, the question made me think about how well authors need to know the universes they create (which was what brought the GRRM scenario to mind).
In my own opinion, writers are certainly the definitive authority with respect to the worlds they fashion. Thus, there's no greater authority on Harry Potter than J.K. Rowling. No one knows more about Westeros than GRRM. Likewise with other authors and their creations. That said, however, I think writers benefit from leaving some things unknown - even to themselves (if that makes sense); it's gives them the flexibility to be creative down the road.
So, while I do have the answer to some of the questions that I'm usually asked (e.g., will Jim and Electra get back together? Will Paramount revert back to his old self?), others are still a mystery, even to me. With respect to Jim's family, they haven't been "written out of the show," but for now they'll probably be limited to guest appearances. However, depending on whether it suits the storyline, the door is open for them to become regulars again...
