The Celts had a festival (no, it's not Samhain, that was only mentioned centuries later) that, after the evangelization of the British Isles, was replaced in Ireland by All Hallows Eve. With the persecution of Protestants, Irish Catholics had to flee and, as a result, took All Hallows Eve to other places (such as the United States) where it was modified.
Nowadays, since the original meaning has been almost completely lost, there are Christians who don't even know that the name Halloween has this Christian origin. But Mother Statue and Sister Dinis like to revive the traditions.
