Preview from upcoming {update}
Added 2024-07-09 16:16:22 +0000 UTCHi, James here. We're gonna be tryin out something with these next few updates, so here is a preview track from the the first one. We needed a handful of tracks and since we aren't in the position where we can be paying people to do outsourced work on a short notice like this, it fell to me to write 'em. A lot of them are sort of loose concepts/sketches like this so I'll post a little bit about them here.
This one uses samples from one of my favorite songs "Ghost Town" by The Specials. It also has a few bits from "Ghost Mound" which is a song from Hiveswap that I didn't name. Obviously this is named after the Specials song, but it didn't sound anything like the song or have anything to do with it, which was annoying at the time. I never really mentioned it but I always sort of hated how the old lead writer made lyrics for those songs because they weren't very good and we don't get along.
Anyway, now the songs co-exist because of that. That is the only reason I added those samples in. It has nothing to do with the update, I just liked it. Or does it? It might? It doesn't. Or does it? Hmm. Damn.. does it?
Anyway, so this little exercise in sampling made it in. I would have liked to spend more time like mixing and extending it, but there were a bunch of other tracks I needed to do. I will be sharing those in the coming weeks as well. OK see you soon.

It reminds me of the sand dunes from post apocalypse earth and the area near Kanaya's home, with a mixture of hiveswap and the kind of smooth jazz I'd expect from Fallout: Equestria, but with a sense of lingering corruption.

2024-07-09 23:13:35 +0000 UTCIf people *really* want to do it you can always accept songs at a discount of negotiable choosing after hearing some prior work, if you really wanna go that route. I know there are also other aspects to consider such as proper crediting and the fact that they may not get the exact vibe right that you and others are going for. It's a big issue with commissioning outside the main team, especially as sometimes you need to give details and trust that those outside the main team don't spill said details. It's a lot to consider.

2024-07-09 16:59:07 +0000 UTCI love hearing how the soundscape of Hiveswap has fed back into Homestuck (as well as through PesterQuest), it's a really cool kinda cross-pollination! Same for a lot of its visual style and motifs, especially in the latest few updates. Also excited to see more sampling in the soundtrack - it always felt a little strange that Homestuck didn't directly sample more (non-Homestuck) music considering the art is often so deliberately Google-Images-photobash-heavy! I guess that was mostly communicated through soundfonts from old games and stuff though (and it might have been saved for big important plot stuff like the Midnight Crew remixes on purpose). Anyway, The Specials' instrumentation is a really good fit in particular!
