NEW EPISODE – The Daniel Craig James Bond Era Is The Weirdest Franchise Ever

or watch it ad-free on Nebula

I've been planning a Bond video since 2019. Originally my big idea was to call it "Learning Film History Through the James Bond Series," and it would be about how other than the first couple movies, the Bond franchise has never innovated, and instead just reflects whatever is popular in cinema at the time.

My plan was to time it to the release of No Time to Die, originally planned for...checks notes...April 2020.

Anyway, when the movie got delayed, so did the video, and by the time the movie came out in late 2021, I was too busy working on Night of the Coconut. But then, the more I thought about it, I realized my thesis didn't work as well as I'd hoped. It applied to certain eras of the Bond movies, and the one it worked best with...was the Daniel Craig era.

So that became the video, and I gotta say, it's a lot easier to talk about 5 movies than 25 movies.

I really liked this essay. Thanks for doing all the research. What do you think about the idea of James Bond being a training program rather than an individual? It would be an easy way for Villeneuve to refresh the franchise after Daniel Craig’s apocalyptic ending. Also - it’s interesting that the Brocollis were chasing the vibes of a Christopher Nolan film yet Amazon failed to land him as their next director.
