The Insane Realism Of The Movie That Changed How Cars Are Filmed

or watch ad-free on Nebula

We're back with another Europe video!

Since I was in Cannes, I realized Monaco was just a 1-hour train ride away. I've always wanted to do an episode on John Frankenheimer's GRAND PRIX, a movie partly set at the Monaco Grand Prix, so I figured hey, why not just shoot it there?

(to keep expectations in check, most of this is just shot in a hotel room, not actually outside in Monaco)

This is not really about Grand Prix as a whole (there are no spoilers and you don't need to watch the movie before the episode), instad it's all about the racing scenes, and how they revolutionized car movies, and basically created the modern visual language for car scenes. In researching this we found so much cool technical stuff about how they shot these scenes with cameras mounted on Formula 1 cars. It's pretty wild.

After this, we've got one more Europe episode, and then back to more normal episodes!

* 80s cinema

I know I’m incredibly late catching up with this, but… How’s possible that Patrick stopped the credits to show Francis Coppola without commenting that, a couple of lines below there was MENAHEM GOLAN. I mean, Cannon Films’s Menahem Golam… one of the most interesting characters of 8’s cinemas, perhaps of all cinema… the builder of a film empire producing movies from Zeffirelli to Chuck Norris and everything in between… Probably would be fit for a video of its own…
