And our second match-up of Round 2, this is going to be a tough one...
Playing "Cinematic" Video Games As Someone Who Cares About Cinema (submitted by Jacob Geller)
vs.
The Anatomy of a Legacy Sequel (submitted by Harrison Webb)
I used to play a decent amount of video games, but pretty much stopped about ten years ago when I got too busy with making videos. And in that time games have evolved and become increasingly cinematic. So for this, I would actually play some of these games (like The Last of Us) and look at how they work as storytelling mediums. What are the pros and cons of long interactive movies? Would these stories be more effective just being movies? Are the ultra-realistic graphics too deep in the uncanny valley? And...how much will gamers yell at me for my dumb opinions?
The legacy sequel, or "legasequel" has become a consistent feature in modern cinema, and while these movies have a lot in common, there are also a lot of variations in their approach. so we'd get into Top Gun: Maverick, The Force Awakens, Blade Runner 2049, Matrix Resurrections, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Tron: Legacy...but also go all the way back to The Color of Money, which is kind of the original one.
And don't forget to vote in our other match-up of the day: Godzilla vs. Surprise Cameos

Come on guys, Pat only gets to play games for like a week every year. Vote for games!
2023-01-23 21:09:56 +0000 UTChmm would Twin Peaks: The Return be covered in the Legasequel video?
2023-01-23 20:42:53 +0000 UTCCinematic games is a vastly more interesting topic than films that are feeding on nostalgia for ticket sales.

2023-01-23 18:44:38 +0000 UTCI’m more excited about the games topic just because it feels like the sort of topic we wouldn’t be likely to see. Lega-sequels seems like something Patrick might eventually cover regardless. Hopefully games can go on a late run…

2023-01-23 18:25:09 +0000 UTCI’m going with cinematic games. I think a lega-sequel video would be better in a few years after we’ve witnessed the fallout of Maverick’s success.
2023-01-23 17:56:57 +0000 UTCHm, I'm flipping on my Round One stance. Analysing cinematic video games opens up a lot of interesting questions. The question of Requels feels like it can be reduced to "Why? Nostalgia. Sometimes it be good. Sometimes it be bad."
2023-01-23 17:20:15 +0000 UTCPsycho II might be worth a mention as one of the first, if it counts

2023-01-23 16:49:34 +0000 UTCI think Scream (5?) did a decent job of breaking down Legasequels (though I'm sure Patrick would knock it out of the park). With the Last of Us show out there now, there's some unexplored territory there.
2023-01-23 16:19:28 +0000 UTC(A FALSE CONCESSION IS JUST PART OF MY STRATEGY)

2023-01-23 16:12:21 +0000 UTCThis was literally my thought when I saw I was matched up against you! I’d be excited for either topic to win
