It's day 3! Our first match-up is...
The Rise and Fall of 90s Legal Dramas (submitted by Iain McOmish)
vs.
Sight and Sound 2022: Why 'Jeanne Dielman' Took First Place (submitted by Robert Sullivan)
Remember how in the 90s, John Grisham adaptations were as common as superhero movies are today? Seemingly every major director, from Francis Ford Coppola to Sydney Pollack to Alan Pakula to Joel Schumacher to Robert Altman were jumping on the chance to adapt one of these novels about crusading lawyers in tough situations. They're a kind of movie that doesn't really exist anymore, big-budget dramas starring major movie stars arguing in courtrooms. And they were good!
And it's up against a very different kind of topic: the 2022 poll from Sight and Sound magazine ranking the 100 greatest films of all time, in which, in a massive upset, Chantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles came in at #1. So this video would explore the purpose and value of polls like this, why this new #1 happened and why it matters, what it even means to rank movies and how that can impact the greater public, and potentially alter people's perspective on movies. And hey maybe I could do the whole thing in a Jeanne Dielman homage, delivering the essay while mashing ground beef or something.
Comments
The Sight And Sound poll has kind of killed its own credibility. Who cares?
