It's day 2! Our first match-up is...
What Makes a Surprise Cameo Actually Good? (submitted by Eric Johnson)
vs.
Krzysztof Kieślowski's Three Colours Trilogy - The Original Cinematic Universe (submitted by Raman Sehgal)
The cameo video I imagine being kind of like the PG-13 F-bomb video from a few years ago - breaking down a short, simple cinematic device, discussing the functions it serves and how it can be used well. And I have strict rules about what really qualifies as a cameo. Tom Cruise in Goldmember? That counts. Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder? Not a cameo! If they appear in more than one scene it's just a supporting role.
And then for something totally different, we have Krzysztof Kieślowski's Three Colors Trilogy, some of the most celebrated and iconic European arthouse movies of the 90s (which I only saw for the first time in 2022). These are wonderful, incredible films...that also happen to exist within a cinematic universe, with overlapping characters and timelines. So how is this approach that has come to dominate mainstream franchise filmmaking used by a wildly different kind of movie? What does it add? Could these franchise blockbusters learn anything from it? And despite what the title here says, YES I KNOW IT'S NOT ACTUALLY THE FIRST CINEMATIC UNIVERSE, so the video itself would have a different title.
And don't forget to vote in today's other match-up, Legacy Sequels vs. Hacking in Movies!

This is the only one of these brackets that I find it hard to choose between.

2023-01-20 19:10:13 +0000 UTCOne or two other brackets, my thinking is, "Ehh, these are fine, I guess. Patrick will make them interesting, but neither topic grabs me at the moment." Whereas, in this case, I really, really, really want Patrick to do both of these.

2023-01-20 18:47:44 +0000 UTCKieslowski is The Replacements (the band) of modern cinema - every critic knows and loves 'em and mistakenly thinks that the general media fanbase is way more aware than they are. Surprise cameos would be a great video, but Patrick - 3 Colours would be a God damn public service!!
2023-01-20 17:59:00 +0000 UTCThree colors is the best trilogy that no one knows about. Also I want Patrick to talk about Red , because it's my all time favorite film.
2023-01-20 17:31:09 +0000 UTCThe Universal Monsters are probably the first cinematic universe, but I really want to hear about the Three Colors trilogy.

2023-01-20 16:18:47 +0000 UTCThree Colors Trilogy is great, but I think Cameos is a much more interesting video topic.
