The Movie, Merch, and the Next Video

Hey everyone! I'm writing this post on my first day off in a few months. The movie is finally out (and people seem to like it, thank god), and I'm done with podcast appearances for a few days. And good thing, because I am exhausted and my voice is completely gone.

There's no huge news, but I just wanted to drop in to mention a few things.

-Last Tuesday we did a proper movie premiere for Night of the Coconut at the IFC Center in NYC. It was incredible. I even got to meet some of you there! A few days ago the great David Chen and I chatted about what that experience was like, and you can watch that here.

-The collection of Night of the Coconut merch is out now.  We've got blood-soaked Charl pins, collectible cups modeled after 90s fast food-movie tie-ins, t-shirts, and of course our incredible movie poster. I love this stuff so much.

-The next video, coming out at the end of the month, is about how we made the whole season (and movie) over the past two years. What the initial plan was, how we adjusted it to adapt to real-life stuff like the pandemic, what changed in the process, etc.

If you have any questions about any of that, ask them in the comments here!  I'll try to cover everything.

That's all! time to get some more rest! Hope you all enjoyed the movie!

First of all: what was the shot you "stole" from Dario Argento's Deep Red? What was the most difficult scene to shoot? Were there character arcs and story beats you planned but decided to keep for the new season? For example, I kinda expected a trip to the Jake Universe but it probably would've been a ton of work (and it makes sense to leave some doors open for the upcoming episodes).

Armando Marchetti

Were there any moments in the script that were just too crazy (or expensive/impractical) and needed to be pulled back?

Chris Emmett

Going forward with the narrative framing around future video essays, I’m curious how the development of season one will affect your approach to future seasons. What were some of the big takeaways in terms of lessons learned/things you’d want to do different?

David Daut

Hi Patrick, congrats again on the completion of the film! I was thrilled to be able to attend the premiere in The City. Do you know if the red carpet photos going to be put up on the web for us to peruse? Would love to see them!

Peter Marino

Rest up! Will finish the film soon (enjoying what u saw so far). Is it uncouth of me to ask when to expect the Zach Snyder video?

Alex Ancy

Hi Patrick, the movie was great, and the premier was a lot of fun! I'd love to hear more about unexpected or unusual challenges of having a puppet character, e.g. moving him, acting against him, voicing him.

You've previously spoken about the spreadsheet developed so that you could better plan filming sequences. If you had made that spreadsheet during writing, do you think the movie would have been different and how?

Chris Erickson

It’d be interesting to know how far things differed from the initial plan. Obviously Covid had a big impact but where there any other ideas that changed / evolved over time?
