Why Are Batman Movies Afraid Of Robin?

Also available ad-free on Nebula

Whoa look at that! A new video!

Sorry it's been a little while. Finale post-production has been nuts and clearly taking longer than anticipated (like literally everything with the finale). But finally March rolled around and I was scheduled to make a video again, so here we are.

I know I don't usually do topical videos connected to new movies, and I try to avoid covering superhero franchise stuff, but as I get into in the video, I've been on this huge Batman kick. Like I have read hundreds of Batman comics over the past few months. I had a different video lined up here (it's coming later this month), and then the day after I saw The Batman I was reading some early 90s comics and this idea just hit me fully formed. And here we are.

A really exciting part about this one is that I brought in my good friend Siddhant Adlakha to co-write it. He's a phenomenal film writer, like I was a fan of his writing long before we knew each other, and his contributions really elevated this one. And this probably won't be the last time we work together.

And for Nebula subscribers, I made a bonus video where I just sat for an hour and just rambled about all my thoughts on The Batman. So if you're dying to know my take on the movie, here you go!

Why Are Batman Movies Afraid Of Robin?

Comments

Good video. One thing worth mentioning is that Bruce was like 8 (or 10, depending on the story) when he vowed to commit his life to the mission that ultimately lead him to becoming Batman. If we’re to believe that, there’s no reason we can’t believe another child might come to a similar conclusion. But it’s a bit like anything that deserves an audience; if the filmmakers believe it’s truly worth believing in, they’ll handle it with respect and mold it to fit the generation it’s presented in. I think Reeves could be up to the task.

Robin is essential to really *really* get Batman “right” in live action. I kind of hate how everyone involved in the movies always shit-talks the concept. He needs to be in there. And if the MCU has shown us anything it at least has shown us that if you wanna put a silly thing in a comic book movie, you just…do it. Who cares what the worst members of your audience say?

@Patrick - i'm often conflicted on if i prefer Tim / Dick. Almost all the late 90s Chuck Dixon runs on Robin, Nightwing, and even Batgirl were amazing to my comics upbringing (highly recommended, despite Dixon's more recent problematic statements on Robin). ANYHOW - worth noting - on my comics podcast "Quarantined Comics" (not unlike "the monthly trade") we did a 4-part "character study" mini-series on Robin / Dick Grayson that might be worth checking out. And of course, would love to have you on the show anytime** to read + review something. https://www.qtdcomics.com/episodes?season=2 **(of course, that offer only stands for when you're DONE with the season finale)

At some point some Kevin-Feige-type is going to come along and realize the Batfam Cinematic Universe and it'll all be your fault, Mister Willems...

I was just thinking about this topic the other day! Can't wait for the finale, whenever it comes.

Robin is vital to Batman and I pray the new trilogy utilizes one of them.

Possibly silly question but diea this video include spoilers of The Batman because I haven't seen it yet and would like to see it (the video) after the movie if there are spoilers.
