EARLY ACCESS - The Austin Powers video

I've been waiting to release this until the election has a real conclusive result, but since things are looking pretty good, I thought I'd give you folks an early look. For us Americans it's been a stressful week, so here's something very silly to distract you for half an hour.

THIS IS FOR PATRONS ONLY SO PLEASE DON'T SHARE THE LINK PUBLICLY

EARLY ACCESS - The Austin Powers video

Comments

Thanks for this essay Patrick, it was even better than I thought it would be. Here's a question I don't think you answered in the vid: do you think these films still hold up after all these years?

Hi Patrick, thank you for this fun video. Those scene transitions were the best! Hahaha, they made me very happy. And I want to revisit those films now as well. Thank you for the early access! And have a wonderful weekend sir!

Also, I remember saying out loud on the Blofeld revelation in SPECTRE "what is this now, Austin Powers?" It was quite silly move, to be honest...

Another interesting trend that forecasted Austin Powers. In Spain, the first movie was dubbed with a regular cast of voice actors. Austin Powers and Dr Evil had different actors. They aimed at a "parody Jamesbondesque" interpretation. But, the second and third movie went with a Spanish comedian with no previous dub record, other than being known for making funny overdubs for his TV show on old movies. He made all the characters voices interpreted by Mike Myers, and went for heavily influenced by his previous work. And wow it payed of in terms of popularity. The movies where super successful, and most people will agree that they are more memorable. Keep in mind that some of the jokes with accents, etc are lost in dubbing. Since then, there has been a trend of people with less experience in voice acting participating in movies and bringing their previous characters to the set, with very mixed results (normally is not great)

Fantastic episode! Puts a lot of recent media in stark perspective. Story time: so, I was at Uni having a bad day, took the afternoon off and went to see Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. At one point I fell off my chair laughing. Not a metaphor, I was leaning forward, grasping my stomach in fits of laughter and actually, genuinely slid onto the floor in the cinema. There were maybe 10 people there that day and I was the only one who laughed during the entire screening. I really hope they tell this story as well.

This has been such a tough week and this video was just what we all needed (even those of us who are not Americans)! And those transitions are amazing ! Thanks a million 😊

I've never seen the Austin Powers movies, so this all came as a chilling revelation. Thanks for blowing my mind, Patrick!

No joke, I came VERY close to including that line from Phonogram in the video

I feel betrayed. Your twitter promised a stupid video, but it wasn't! Also, A+ work on those transitions. (Re: the nostalgia thing, there's a quote from the Kieron Gillen/Jamie McKelvie comic Phonogram that I feel nails it in couple of ways: "Nostalgia is an emotion for people with no future". One the one hand, that's an artifact of technology, specifically video tape. The with that, past is no longer in the past but summonable at a whim. Unlike the 60:s, you don't have to invent anything anymore. It's no coincidence so much nostalgia is centered on the 80:s. On the other hand there's the way the way the comic actually plays it - the past being summonably at a whim means it can be abused by clammy ghouls intent on draining all life from it - hi Ready Player One/Rise of Skywalker. And then there's the very literal 2020 way to look at it. But with the election results being what they appear to be, well. Maybe the tide can be stemmed on that last one.)

I've been staying out of social media to avoid election doomscrolling. All I know so far is that the results are pretty good unless you're the president who's being a big baby about it.

Most of half an hour just to set up and lead into the pitch for watching Alex Goes Bananas? Now that's how to support your Nebula creators, yeah baby yeah! (AGB is a great show, make no mistake.)

That was awesomePatrick, transitions were so great!

Thanks for the early upload Patrick, it's been a stressful week for non-americans as well. My girlfriend (a recent convert to your videos) and I have been watching the Austin Powers movies in anticipation of this, and she keeps asking me every day ' Has Patrick uploaded the Austin video yet'. Between this video and Biden, it's time to crack open the wine! :D
