The Next Video

Coming later this week, the last video essay of the year! And we're treating it as a season finale because...idk I thought it would be fun.

If you follow me on Twitter you may have seen me working out this idea over the summer. I actually had this one scheduled for September, and then burnout hit and I was struggling to finish the script. But now it's back.

It's partly about the way we talk about movies, but mostly about recognizing the kinds of movies we don't usually see video essays about. The ones that aren't disasters and aren't masterpieces. That aren't made by visionary auteurs. Movies that are...functional. Pretty good. Solid entertainment for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

In other words, we're finishing up the year with the most lukewarm take possible. Stay tuned for it later this week!

I always find myself wondering what Golden Age people are referring to when most movies weren't average. I mean, it's just math.

It's a neat idea. Movies like Yesterday, The Dead Don't Die, Rocketman, The Kid Who Would be King, Blinded by the Light, Ford v. Ferrari, and Fighting With My Family deserve to be acknowledged for being perfectly fine Saturday afternoon entertainment.

I'm participating in the YouTube Walkout but I'll look for it on the 14th!

Yes! I'm really excited about this video. I think it should be an annual end-of-year thing. By the nature of art, there will always been way more mediocre but solid films than masterpieces. Which means you can easily make this kind of video every year. We don't dedicate any youtube time to those films. I think it adds to the blockbuster problem we're seeing in Hollywood, where it's a $200 million franchise starter, or it's worthless. Lazy Sunday Afternoon movies are important. This is the hill I'm dying on. Can't wait for the video Patrick!

Keep up the great work.
