The Next Goal?
Added 2019-09-25 15:38:25 +0000 UTCHey everyone!
As you probably saw, last week we blew past our 750 patrons goal. That's the goal at which I'll take my parents to see Avengers: Endgame and make a video about the experience and their reactions.
This is coming very soon. And to everyone saying "but what will you do since the movie isn't in theaters anymore???" don't worry. We planned ahead.
But now, it's time to set further goals.
I have some on the Patreon already, but they're mostly ones like "I'll be able to hire someone/rent a studio" and those are only exciting for me.
I want to add fun goals, goals that are actually rewarding to the audience.
One we have now is for 3,000 patrons, we'll make this huge "What if ___ directed ___" video we've had written for years. But that's clearly way off.
On Twitter we've talked about doing something with this "Stephen Sondheim's X-Men" idea Scott and I came up with a while back (one song is already written).
But I want to turn this over to you: what are some fun/weird/crazy/silly things you'd like to see that fall outside the regular sort of videos we do?
(these can but don't have to involve my parents)
These might be for 1,000 patrons or 1,250 or 1,500

Make an actual short movie. No explaining, no style copying, no youtube goofiness, just a regular old short movie in which you put your heart and soul into. Or a sequel to your high school movie.
2019-10-09 14:32:52 +0000 UTCI watched your vid on how to be a filmmaker as that is a passion of mine. I plan on shooting soon. But anyway I'd like to see a vid on how to do shot composition or cinematography or how to notice good shot composition or good cinematography in films or what is good shot composition or good cinematography. A video on how to analyze films. Or what if Quentin Tarantino directed Star Wars?
2019-10-03 21:26:38 +0000 UTCI had thoughts that were similar to some of the above: - Loved the collaborations/discussions with Griffin Newman and Mikey Neumann (the latter turned me on to FilmJoy, so thanks for that), so any other opportunities you might have to do something similar could be really cool. - I also love the "Patrick Explains [x] and why it's great" stuff. Maybe that could be an opportunity to highlight some movie or comic book run that might fly under a lot of people's radar, as opposed to more well known stuff like the Fast & Furious franchise. Give us some of your deep cuts! - Also really like the idea of anything you can talk Scott, Rachel, and the Torpeys into appearing in. Skewing your real world friendships with them in some way, like Nathan T mentioned above, would be fun. For example, perhaps an origin story on how ThiccDaddy Pwillems and The Brothers T first joined forces? (maybe I just want "ThiccDaddy Pwillems and The Brothers T" to be more of a thing? Who knows.) - a Pitch video, one part "What if [person] directed [super hero movie]", mixed with one part "How to Make a Good FF Movie" type stuff, where you challenge yourself to take a ridiculous sounding idea and try to make it viable. (maybe from viewer suggestions?) Not to imply you should copy what another YT channel does - but just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about: ScreenJunkies has a show called Movie Fights; if you've never seen it, it's basically Movie Nerd Debate Club. (side note, I bet you would be *great* on this show.) Sometimes the fights are basically "pitch [x] movie", and sometimes the pitches involve pulling random names out of a hat. So someone will wind up having to pitch, say, "a Batman movie starring Matthew McConaughey and Judi Dench". Dunno if the concept does anything for you, but there you go.

2019-09-26 02:23:13 +0000 UTCI would enjoy a whole video that's just a melodrama about relationships with your podcast co-hosts and collaborators. Kind of like the framing devices in your video essays, but without the essay.

2019-09-25 15:55:44 +0000 UTCHi. I’m an actor in western mass so I have much more experience working on the stage than on film. In past videos, you’ve spoken about directing but I’m interested to hear your take on working with actors/performers-non-actors. Specifically, I’m interested, as an actor, understanding how film directors think about actors. How did your education prepare you to work with actors? Did you study theories, case studies, was there a whole class (if so, what did the syllabus look like)? As someone who made films before school, how did your experience making films with friends contribute to your idea of working with actors? Do you think film school prepared you enough to work with actors? What’s your take on the amount of rehearsal for films and what do you think the purpose of rehearsal is? Essentially I’m looking for some sort of frame of reference because I’ve had little experience working in film and much more in theater where acting seems more collaborative. So I’m interested in your experience but also your knowledge of how film school directors are taught to work with actors and how some of your directing idols do it. The framework I’ve found in the theater is that directors tend to direct from a standpoint of one of four engines then move outwards: plot, character, language, or environment. Do you think this is applicable/if so, where do you fall? An aside inspired by your last video: how would you define fear in a creative process for yourself? What is it’s mechanism? Does it limit you and/or fuel you? (I’m currently doing a BA thesis on this topic, so I had to slip it in)
2019-09-25 15:54:40 +0000 UTCIt would be fun to bring in more celebrities or film makers for you to either interview or discuss a topic with, like you did with Griffin Newman for the discussion of superhero movies.
