A Question for Patrons

For the entire time this Patreon has existed, the purpose has been to help fund the creation of the YouTube videos. That's been it, and the videos are the only place I advertise it.

But over the past year I've launched a couple podcasts that, while affiliated with the YouTube channel, are collaborations with other people (as in, I share the costs instead of covering it all myself).

To make things simple, I've mostly excluded the podcasts from the Patreon. I might post about them, but the Patreon funds don't go toward those, and I don't plug the Patreon on the shows.

But since I know there's a lot of overlap in the audience between the videos and the podcasts, I'm wondering if it makes sense to use Patreon to support the podcasts as well. Here are the options I currently see:

A. Include "The Infinity Podcast" & "We Heart Hartnett" (returning soon with a new name) in this Patreon, and set a percentage of the revenue (decided on with my co-hosts) aside for those shows

B. Make separate Patreons for the podcasts

My preference is option A, but I want to know what you think (if you care at all).

And the followup question:

If we do include the podcasts in this Patreon, how would you like your pledge to be used?

Comments

Basically, I use Patreon to pay for the stuff I watch/listen to. I don't listen to the Podcasts.

I watch your videos and the infinty pod

I didn't vote but I think it depends. Do you spend a lot of time on the podcast or is it more of a "just for fun" thing? Are the podcasts about movies or similar topics to your youtube channel? I support other people on patron. God Awful Movies has their own Patreon, as does Citation Needed, despite the fact that the same people are in each. One podcast focuses on movies and the other more reading wikipedia articles and being funny. And it's a well-run podcast. Reading, watching, recording is like a quarter of the time spent on the podcast or something. The rest is entirely spent on editing, so I can understand why you'd split the Patreons up. It's a significant amount of work.

Do whatever you need to with the pledge! It makes a lot of sense on the creator side to consolidate your Patreon audiences. The only thing I'm concerned about on the patron side is getting much fewer videos or getting notifications for content I'm not really interested in, but I can also do that with email filtering if the post titles have "The Infinity Podcast: ..." "We Heart Hartnett: ..." etc.

But I want to be clear here, I would not be upset, and would happily shuffle my Patrons around to include this page again if I got into the Podcasts. I can see how if you could do it all again you might choose to include more than just YouTube in this Patron page to begin with. Adjusting things based on new knowledge is fine and may come with some change in Patronage, but I'm certainly not offended or upset or going to take to Twitter over it. :)

My monthly Patreon fund is very limited, so I have to make choices about what to pay for. I would probably withdraw my monthly support if I felt the funding was going towards a different product from the one I am attempting to purchase/encourage. Since I don't listen to the podcasts, and became a Patron to support the creation of, and pay for the consumption of, your YouTube videos specifically, I would rather have the option to support each kind of content separately, since they are consumed so separately. I encourage you to branch out and do more, and would not be upset if you decided to turn this Patreon page into funding for all of it, but that was not what I signed up for, so I would change my pledge until/unless I got into the podcasts.

I enjoy many of the things you create. You have created them without my input in the past. I am happy to help you continue. Go forth and create!

I agree with the others, for me the Patreon has always been more about supporting you as a creator more than sponsoring your specific works. I actually assumed that you divvied up the money a bit to the podcasts anyways.

I pledge (a small amount) to your patreon for the videos, and I have never listend to your podcasts. As I am not a native english speaker, it is a little hard for me to follow spoken english without the support of the image. But I voted for the "Both" option: I do not pledge to "buy" videos, but to support your work. I don't care if some of that work is something I will probably never "consume" (sorry I din’t find a better word). I see my contribution as a tip, you may use it however you want.

I never got into We Heart Hartnett (purely because the topic didn't grab me and I never tried it), but I do love the Infinity Podcast. As far as I'm concerned, my pledge is my pledge, and you should do with it what you will. I could imagine a world in which you stopped making videos and only made podcasts about fishing, in which case I'll probably drop my pledge... but in general, you're the artist and I'm willing to let you do your art. You do you, man.

We Heart Hartnett is what got me to become a backer!
