How Garth Marenghi's Darkplace Redefines Parody

I think I might need to revamp the thumbnail for this later today so it's a bit more clickbaity. But anyway...

These last two videos have been surprisingly difficult to make, since they've come up during oddly busy times. This one coming up the same time as New York Comic Con did not help at all.

We originally had an extremely complex plan for this one, with the framing device involving a whole separate narrative running through the video and commenting on the essay itself.

But then it was Tuesday and it hadn't even been fully written and the video had to come out within a couple days so we realized we needed to simplify it. I still like what we came up with, but I wish we could have made the original idea work.

The process for making these videos is constantly evolving, and never really getting easier. But each one is also a huge learning experience.

Also: this is probably going to be the least-viewed video essay I make all year. I've had the idea for it for ages but kept putting it off since I knew it would perform poorly. So even if you've never heard of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, give it a watch. If nothing else, I think you'll be convinced to watch the show (which is all available for free on YouTube).

And the next video is 100% going to make up for this by being commercial as hell.

used to watch this on repeat when a friend discovered it around 2010, so happy you made this.

Great stuff. Have you seen Alice Lowe's Prevenge?

Have you seen the follow up. Man to Man with Dean Learner? It uses some of the same characters to tackle the unreality of TV interview shows. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_to_Man_with_Dean_Learner

I'm a huge fan of Garth Marenghi, good to see it's getting some attention. There's a good article in the Guardian today about Matthew Holness - From Garth Marenghi to big-screen horror – what the ‘lost boy’ of comedy did next https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/oct/12/from-garth-marenghi-to-big-screen-horror-what-the-lost-boy-of-comedy-did-next

The show I caught years back on adult swim, and it was brilliant. Even got the DVD after in pal format

Dead excited for this, love this show and wouldn't have thought you'd have seen it.

Ooh, nice, can't wait to see this once I finally get around to watching Garth Marenghi (been meaning to for a long while, and it's all on VOD here, which is cool). By the way (and apologies if you were already aware), did you know Paddington's Paul King worked on Garth Marenghi?
