How Comic Book Storytelling is Changing Movies

Can't write much because I've gotta get back to shooting this year's Christmas video (it's gonna be great) but here's this week's video, a few days late due to me getting kinda sick and just having no energy to edit.

This is a bunch of stuff I've been thinking about for a while, how the rise of comic book movies has been introducing new models of storytelling to cinema. Lotsa talk about that. I think it's fun. Enjoy.

How Comic Book Storytelling is Changing Movies

I was thinking about this video the other night, and it occurred to me that I know another realm of media with similar qualities to comics that you discussed. Established backstory and characters, interconnected narratives, even crossover events: fan fiction! The Elseworld/What If...? is just an AU fic. It seems to me that the main thing that allows this depth of character and story knowledge is lack of copyright. In the case of comics it was the willingness/necessity to hand off a character to new writers and artists under the same license. With fanfic, it's all free and full of disclaimers but basically freely draws from whatever canon exists, often relying on the reader's preexisting knowledge of that canon and building off it without relying on exposition. As you suggest in the video, the consolidation of IP, tide of money, and willingness to collaborate are contributing to the comicification of the movies.
