So after a couple weeks of videos about filmmaking, here's something very different. Actually this is way more like the kind of thing we used to make all the time, in that it's weird and colorful and exists only because we thought it was funny.
The super dull backstory: last fall my sister gave me the Nook she got from her old job (in publishing) and never used. I thought the idea of an X-TREME late-90s-style commercial for the Nook was really funny. For some reason, way funnier than for a Kindle or any other tablet/e-reader.
Skip ahead a few months and my parents had a few old TVs to get rid of. So we figured this was an ideal opportunity to destroy a TV on camera. And, as you probably guessed, Matt wrote this.
The budget was $47. $33 for the JNCOs Matt is wearing (JNCOs were essential) and $14 for the wig.
I want to point out that Jake's performance as the Nookster might be my favorite thing he's ever done. His delivery of the narration is especially brilliant.
Also, big thanks to Matt and Jake's parents for letting us shoot this at their house for the full "shitty teen" vibe. And for loaning us the sledge hammer.
Coming next week: a long overdue video we should've made three years ago. And after that: the next video essay, which I started writing last night. It's gonna be a good one.
As I mentioned at the end of this video, we want to add some more supplementary/bonus content. Matt suggested a Twitch stream, some people have suggested regular YouTube Live streams. Or it could be a more focused recurring thing. Basically, something unscripted and looser to give you guys more of a look behind the scenes. Let me know! We want to hear from you.
(also BTS videos for every regular video is a $500 goal on Patreon)
