One More Thing: Waterlily

Greetings Adventurers,

As we start off another year, we’re excited to say that we’re entering into our 3rd full year of content creation here with AB. It’s been amazing that a little project we started up for some fun has made it as far as it has and we couldn’t be more thankful for all of the amazing support we’ve received from you all in that time. It’s not just lip service to say we couldn’t do this without you. All that said, we’ve got another One More Thing ready to soak your players!

As with all of these One More Thing releases, it's exclusive to patrons. If you're not a patron and want this release, please consider supporting us here. For patrons, you'll have to grab the files from your master post (linked below) or from the Katalogue to see the stats. We hope you enjoy it.

Design notes from Matthew:

Something that we’ve been wanting to do for some time is get into some more elemental creatures as well. There’s been some great elementals developed for 5E and PF2E and we’re hoping to create some more for you all as well. I’ve always thought of water as something playful. The was it skips across rocks and bubbles down rivers has always seemed like it could have a life of its own and I wanted to bring that to a creature in some way, thus the delightful defender that we’re putting in front of you now.

I’ve always thought that auras could have a lot more too them in 5E. Often times it’s just that you take damage if you’re close to a creature at the start of your turn. It felt like it was just a tax on melee character HP as opposed to anything more interesting than that. I think writing an aura that opens them up to damage from other creatures is a more fun way to handle it. You could pair this creature well with several others and it would offer some interesting synergies between them.

In the PF2E world, I just love playing around with different action economy types. I think the most interesting creatures are those that have a variable method to their turns. Ones where there is no right or wrong answer in how to play them are just the most interesting creatures to me. I try to mimic that in my design by offering varied possible actions while not overwhelming the GM with too many skills. It’s a difficult balance point, but one of my favorites.

As our first One More Thing release of the year, I have to say I’m especially proud of Fernando’s art on this one. I think he really captured the beauty and flow of water and the posing on this one felt really engaging to me. I’m so excited to bring it to you now.
