Ghostwalk Gown

Greetings adventurers! 

The ethereal plane is something I try not to get involved with as I always fear ending up stuck there in the gray and twisting wastes of ghosts and wraiths, but when this little number ended up on my doorstep, I will admit I was intrigued. The previous owner shared with me that it had once been a wedding gown long ago, but through unknown means she thought it had become haunted. Giving it a once over, I could see it was teeming with potential through a bit of refinement. Well a few cuts and enchantments later and it’s safe to say I think I’ve managed to unleash its true potential.

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

Design notes from Matthew:

I often have mentioned that I approach 5E and PF2E writing as two separate exercises and that’s a very deliberate thing. There’s just a fundamental difference in how the two systems tackle everything from action economy to movement, and even fundamentals like how the math adds up and the relative power level of magic items in each system. If you’re trying to just straight translate ideas, you’re going to end up with worse items for whichever system that you’re translating to. It’s kind of like taking idioms from one language and directly translating them to another where the context is missing. 

For the 5E version of this, legendary items are expected to be powerful in their mechanics for both what they can do as well as the defenses they provide. It made sense to bring in some condition and damage type resistances and immunities as you expect a legendary item to pack that kind of punch. Additionally, I wanted this piece to have some movement abilities, thus the chain teleportation. I intentionally went with an unlimited expiration on these as I wanted the potential there for long term hunting if needs be.

In the PF2E version, the ability to step into the ethereal plane is much more restricted and I saw the opportunity to instead give this item the ability to cast ethereal jaunt, giving it the ethereal and movement properties I was looking for. Additionally I gave the chains a wholly different purpose here, serving to provide some defenses without making them extremely overpower compared to other items at this level. What we end up with is two very different pieces that both match the flavor.
