I know some people get upset by how dumb characters in horror movies can be but you hit the nail on the head, they simply don't know they're in a horror movie! Take it from me, from years of running tabletop RPGs I can tell you that everyone knowing they're in a horror movie situation can be dreadfully boring as they simply try their best to leave.
