The Right Stuff (1983) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

This movie reaction is brought to you by one of our Producers!!

Such a super interesting series of events! I do remember hearing about the space race, and it was nice to see parts/highlights of it. I will say, that I didn't expect to see Ed Harris as such a charismatic person, he looks so different when he smiles (compared to Westworld 🤣)

Overall, a great cast and they managed to show us both the astronauts/pilots and their wives' lives. The difficulties, the worries, the celebrations, everything!!

The added comedic bits were pretty fun, and boy howdy is Jeff Goldblum young!!

I do love seeing actors in their earlier roles, it's neat to see what roles they had before becoming stars.

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

For unlikely astronauts in movies... there is... Sphere (1998) - wait, what astronauts? Deep Impact (1998) - yes astronauts! Solaris (1972) - original Soviet version... their answer to 2001 A Space Odyssey. I found this movie streaming for free... I might watch it right now - I saw it a long time ago, being that it's compared to 2001 it must be nuts... and also slow paced... which it is. I have to see it again... to put clarity into the foggy recesses of my memories. This is a movie that should astonish... but can it still?

I wanted to test my subwoofer... so I put on that scene when they're test firing that rocket. I had the subwoofer in my room and it was making the door rattle - from outside I tried pushing hard against the closed door but I couldn't stop it from rattling - heh he 👍

Mannygogou

Wow I'm glad you watched this! This is one of the early astronaut movies (I think) and it starts off being about test pilots. The courage of test pilots... and the ultimate flight was to go into space. Thus the story of the Mercury program, the first manned space flight program. I didn't follow NASA that closely but I like outer space and science... and the study of planets, stars, celestial objects... and galaxies, pulsars, gravitars, neutron stars... black holes 🙂 cosmology which is the study of the origin of the universe. All fun stuff.

Mannygogou

Lance Hendrickson was also in... Aliens, yes? And perhaps also in The Quick and The Dead.

Mannygogou

I've played it enough to get good at orbital docking and stranding the Kerbals on various planets. Tons of fun for me, less so for Jeb and Val lol

The Soviet Union launched missions with passenger slots for at least 57 dogs. Some dogs flew more than once. Most survived; those that died were lost mostly through technical failures, according to the parameters of the test. Laika was an exception and was expected to die during her Earth-orbiting 3 November 1957 Sputnik 2.

Cliff Adams

From the Earth to the Moon would make a great TV series first watch... wonderful details of the entire Apollo program.

Cliff Adams

Yup, I knew about Laika, the dog who was sent to space and they didn't plan on returning her to Earth 😒 Makes me hate people every time I think of it.

Ah, "The Rock", on high on my list! Most of the others I haven't heard of, thanks!

Verowak

I may have seen them, but I definitely don't remember them lol It'll definitely take more prominent roles and more movies for that 😁

Verowak

Popular journalism is just terrible. Sadly a lot of times that's what will be remembered, instead of the actual events. I love that they found it in 2010 and saw that it was deformed. The joy of being able to look at things decades later and be better able to piece together what happened. Thanks for all this info, I really enjoyed reading it and learning!

Verowak

Ooh I'll have to go back and look for his cameo! I noticed the name on the X-1, but had no idea what it meant. I don't think we hear his wife's name much if at all in the movie. John Glenn went on a space shuttle mission at 77?! That is insanely impressive, I wish I will be as able-bodied as him at that age. I'm so glad to hear they were married for so long, the actors did a fantastic job showing just how good they were together.

Verowak

I don't remember hearing the cricket sound, but perhaps it's just subtle and well done enough that it just subliminally adds a layer of tension and franticness lol Those damn reporters!! Absolutely insane! I haven't heard of Bill Conti, but it seems he's done the Rocky movies and Karate Kid too! I guess I'll get to listen to more of his work soon enough!

Verowak

Ah yes, I had a slight mishap in my first KSP rocket. Poor Jebediah, he was so brave! I never played enough to get the hang of it 🤣 Have you played it a lot? Sadly, I've seen The Martian already 😭 I wish I hadn't... unless I do a rewatch haha

Verowak

Oh wow what a story! It always warms my heart hearing about people helping others that are lost or confused. It shows that there's good in this world 🥰 It's also interesting to see how different people interact. You never know who you'll meet or help out in life

Verowak

The Soviets sent up a dog instead of a chimp. I have read that they didn't bother to bring him back down, but don't know if that is true. You saw a fictionalized version of him in The Collector's collection in the MCU "Guardians of the Galaxy" (the dog in the cosmonaut suit with a fish-bowl helmet).

JAKH

For a range of good roles for Ed Harris; good guy, bad guy, nice guy; try these: "Absolute Power" (1997) "A History of Violence" (2005) "Cleaner" (2007) "Milk Money" (1994) "The Abyss Director's Edition" (1989) directed by James Cameron "The Rock" (1996)

JAKH

For some good movies with Scott Glenn, I suggest: "Backdraft" (1991) "Absolute Power" (1997) Good astronaut shows/movies: "From the Earth To The Moon" (1998) 12 episodes, HBO, produced by Tom Hanks *True Story* "Space Cowboys" (2000) fiction, adventure/drama. Directed by Clint Eastwood

JAKH

You previously saw the actor playing Wally Shirra, Lance Hendrickson, in "The Terminator" as one of the detectives. The actress playing Annie Glenn is Mary Jo Deschanel, mother of actresses Zoe & Emily Deschanel. Her husband was the cinematographer. The short recruiter is Harry Shearer, who does a lot of voices for "The Simpsons" You saw Fred Ward (Gus Grissom) in "Tremors"

JAKH

The Life Magazine publisher did not want to use the name "Ivan" for Grissom's by-line because of its association with Russian/Soviets, so he had to settle for "Gus". There were 3 stages in the NASA Space Program: Mercury had 1 man per flight, Gemini had 2 per flight, and Apollo had 3 per flight. Despite what is depicted in the movie, NASA was fully confident in Gus Grissom. He flew Gemini missions and was scheduled to command Apollo 1 before the fatal fire. If he hadn't been killed, he probably would have commanded the first moon landing instead of Neil Armstrong. During his mission, after the capsule was secured after splashdown, Wally Shirra deliberately triggered the explosive bolts on his hatch. He ended up with a huge bruise on his hand, which Grissom did not have anywhere on his body, proving that he had not triggered the bolts, and also proving that a small object could not have done it. An undersea explorer/salvage team found Grissom's Liberty Bell 7 in 2010. Examination showed that the hatch frame had been deformed during reentry, which might have contributed to the activation of the bolts. The copilot of the recovery helicopter reported a large electrical discharge from the recovery probe to the capsule while trying to hook up, just immediately before the hatch blew. While a helicopter is flying, it builds up a large static electrical charge from the friction between the air and the main rotor. The writer of the book that the movie is based on was a reporter, not a historian. He was part of a then-new philosophy of "popular journalism" which believes in reporting the popularly held views, and not bothering with fact-checking or correcting false beliefs/narratives (unfortunately we see this a lot now). This is one of the biggest criticisms of the book and movie.

JAKH

Chuck Yeager was born in 1923, so he was 97 when he died in 2020. The real Yeager had a cameo in the movie as the old bartender wearing a hat the serving Crossfield a steak in Pancho's bar after breaking Mach 2 and in the background while Yeager is dancing with his wife, then later in the bar clips while Yeager is flying the X-1A to Mach 2.5. Did you notice that the name on the nose of the X-1 was "Glamorous Glennis", named after his wife? They were married for 45 years until she died from cancer in 1990. 6 of the 7 mercury astronauts flew. Deke Slayton was disqualified after developing atrial fibrillation. He was re-certified for flight operations in 1970 and flew the joint Apollo-Soyuz international mission to link up with a Soviet Soyuz capsule. He was also depicted in "Apollo 13" as the supervisor of Ed Harris's character (Gene Kranz) John Glenn (Ed Harris) retired from NASA and the USMC and was elected to Congress as Senator from Ohio for over 30 years. After retiring from politics, he returned to NASA to go on a space shuttle mission in 1998 at age 77. He was married for 73 years until his death at age 95. Annie Glenn lived to be over 100.

JAKH

As a movie score lover, Yeager's Triumph from this movie always gets me. Just the right combination of epic, adventurous, military and emotional. Bill Conti did a great job on that one. The sound design is interesting in this movie. Especially that cricket sound they keep using whenever the press is around, just to get on your nerves.

Bemwen

That was awesome, in quite a literal sense. The rocket test montage reminded me of Kerbal Space Program, a sandbox game where you can design, build, and fly your own spacecraft. It's quite fun and frustrating to watch all the rockets blow up while you get the hang of it. As for astronaut movies, I quite like The Martian (2015), staring Matt Damon

Evan S

ok here's a Chuck Yeager story. At some point Chuck Yeager was in an airport somewhere and noticed a guy walking around who looked confused. The guy had on a bunch of world war II ribbons, he was dressed like someone going to a WWII memorial function or something. Anyway Chuck got concerned about him and went over and talked to him, and kind of helped him get sorted out. It turns out that he was one of the guys portrayed in Band of Brothers. I don't know which one he was. I know this because my dad read about it in a book by Chuck Yeager.
