Forrest Gump (1994) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you gonna get.

I didn't notice this until writing this post, but this movie came out in 1994! 1 year before Apollo 13, and Tom Hanks looks so much younger in this movie.

I really need to look at the year the movie came out in.

Absolutely fan-freaking-tastic!! I now understand why everyone loves this movie. Tom Hanks does an amazing job, and it really makes me want to watch more of his movies.

Also, it was only while reading the IMDB trivia that I learned that this movie is based on a book of the same name. I am blown away by how many movies are based on books, it makes me want to read more books to adapt one into a movie 😁

It really seems like the 90s have had so many incredible movies that are right up my alley, which obviously means that I'll need to check out more of them! 🤩

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

Forrest Gump (1994) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

I saw Shawshank Redemption before I started the reaction channel, sadly lol Not sure if I'll ever do a "rewatch" reaction

Verowak

Oh, hey, you're welcome. (Also, I could've sworn you already watched "Shawshank Redemption" for the channel. But I did a search, and I guess you haven't yet. So try to clear your mind of everything I said about it.)

I've noticed that a lot, when something is very well loved, there comes a time where there's a fair bit amount of backlash. It's really quite unfortunate. Now that you mention it, it's more obvious but I never would have been able to point out that it doesn't have a three-act structure. It felt different somehow, perhaps that's why! It sucks when great movies are released the same year, meaning only 1 can really win the top prize (Best Picture Oscar), but hopefully when that happens, the runner up remains as well loved. I find it really amazing that Robert Zemeckis did Back to the Future and this one, it feels just so incredibly different! Thank you for all this info!!

Verowak

I'll have to tap into the Leslie Nielsen filmography soon!

Verowak

I will not say she kept it a secret. This is not 2000 whatever. This is 1975-85 to 85. Gump was crazy and ran for a long time. How do you contact before the internet? That is probably the nicest thing I will say about Jenny. She is better than Percy from Green Mile. I really really do not give receipts. Jenny sucks more than one possibly know.

Because it is life. We are supposed to be like Forrest but also need to recognize the MASSIVE red flags that pop up from time in ones own life. But also, love those who truly love you. Bubba, Lt Dan. The Mom etc. Hell even the Dr that fixed him. But short answer. It offers hope for those broken in love or war. There is something out there. I was broken by both. But this movie gives hope if one stays strong. Simple enough? 22 a day that cannot navigate it is proof not everyone makes it.

Daniel Looney

I will not say Gold digger. Only talking about the movie because Vero has not read the book. Because in the movie on the night in DC. She is not stupid. She should know exactly what a MOH earns someone. Or could figure it out. She chose drugs and random partners. So she is stupid (And not worthy of Forrest) But she is not a gold digger. She just sucks as a human. I will leave my owm life out the rest. But I am 100%PTSD/Moral Injury + knees back hearing etc. etc.

Daniel Looney

In the last few years there have been a number of videos that have popped up on YouTube and various social media platforms putting forth Jenny as the worst villain in the history of cinema because of her treatment of Forrest, taking shameless advantage of a kind-hearted, special needs guy. Not just with the son, but her whole life bed-hopping with "bad boys" while keeping Forrest on the back burner "in case of emergency, break glass", then coming to him for help whenever she got in trouble, needed money, etc. Notice that he always finds her when she is in trouble. This is because she keeps in touch with letters and lets him know where she is, but only when she needs him or when he is doing well (Medal of Honor, successful business, etc.). She shows up to seduce him only after his mother passes because she knew that his mother would have run her off as a gold digger trying to leach her son. She keeps his son a secret until she needs his money for medical care.

4th point and last I promise. Gump was not wrong talking to Jenny about Crater Lake in Oregon (been there), seeing a desert sunset in AZ/NM (Seen that too), or down on the Bayou the lights in the water (Same after Katrina). Or the stars with no light pollution. When I was in the Army I used to pack a small telescope and notebook in my ruck for when I was on Radio Duty I would track the planets and stars while on radio watch at night. (Noise and Light discipline is very important and what is one going to stay awake at night? ) I promise I am done with this movie! I think you are too pure for this movie Vero. :)

Daniel Looney

3rd Major Point. The Medal of Honor is like the Victorian Cross or Red Star for Russia. Most people that get it die doing it. Gump lived. That comes with some benefits though. Free Healthcare and moved to the front of any wait list for any type of care. A generous pension for the rest of their life. Able to wear uniform even after discharged, but even then, the President has to salute you 1st (giving you honor), and you respond in kind acknowledging it. Enlisted salute officers, officers return the respect given. Gump if wanted too could have made multiple presidents salute him. He was that much of a badass

Daniel Looney

2nd Major point is Lt. Dan /Gary Sinease. He did such an amazing job is know to this day as Lt Dan. The brotherhood among combat vets that have deployed together is something very strong. It is really brothers and sisters but from different mothers. The bond is that strong. I can txt Jessi, Lindsey, Rachel, Michelle and get a call back with a day. Just as I can for Dave, Mike, Chris, Justin, Pat or Jason. And it goes both ways. The bond is that strong and endures. The movie did a great showing that.

Daniel Looney

Vero you are WAY WAY too pure like Forrest. I was born in 79 but knew in the mid 90's the following two things. 1. Jenny sucks as a person. Yes, she had trauma, but she also had examples of how not to be. Like Forrest Mom. Yet she always made the wrong choice every step of the way. Except for my #2. Leaving him after making little Forrest was the best thing she ever did in her entire life. Just watching it I figured this out and is out right stated in the novel. She dies of AIDS and little baby Forrest has HIV. Woman to men transmission does happen but harder than some other ways to spread it like childbirth or IV drug use which movie shows her doing. She not only messed up her own life, her sons life and constantly hurt the only person who cared for her. If she would have stayed she would have infected Forrest too, and he did not deserve that. He was WAY too good for her. Especially after the night in DC. Before that, I will grant yeah maybe we mess up, but after that night in DC. Nope, I am done.

Daniel Looney

Commenting before watching the reaction: The 90's really were an embarrassment of riches for cinema. In 1994 alone, three of the movies nominated for Best Picture were Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction and the Shawshank Redemption. As I alluded to in a previous comment, I think Gump is oddly underrated. I know that's a weird thing to say, given how successful it was. But its popularity resulted in a backlash, and people started badmouthing it as a result. I think that really does a disservice to how unconventional it is. For one, it doesn't even have a three-act structure, which is rare for any movie, let alone an Oscar winner. ... Secondly, the tone is incredibly delicate. The movie is constantly poking fun at Forrest's misinterpretation of events, while never being cruel. Unlike most movies in which the lead has a disability, this movie actually plays it for laughs instead of tragedy. ... And finally, the ending does not have a neat bow on it. It's kind of melancholy and open. I know a lot of people wanted Shawshank to win Best Oscar over Gump. And while I think Shawshank is a great movie in its own right, I will say that Shawshank *does* have a very conventional three-act structure and a tidy, crowd-pleasing Hollywood ending. Not that that makes it bad. Just pointing it out to show that Gump is actually the less conventional of the two movies. (Another thing that I find interesting: Gump marks a big shift in Robert Zemeckis's career. His previous movies - Back to the Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit - all had a very particular look and feel to them. But throughout the 90's, Zemeckis went on to do movies like Gump, Contact and Cast Away - all collaborating with cinematographer Don Burgess. As a result, all of Zemeckis's mid-late 90's movies really do have their own identifiable aesthetic.)

If you want funny dialogue delivered in dead serious manner, then look no further than Leslie Nielsen in Naked Gun. Granted it's a different style of humour.. but it's still hilarious (imo that is. I'm a simpleton who loves obvious jokes and slapstick)

jim Howe

It depends on the circumstances - astronaut Frank Poole was shown running for exercise in the centrifuge of his ship, the Discovery, in "2001: A Space Odyssey". While not technically running in outer space, he also was not on the surface of Earth or any other heavenly body.

ButtercupsTrueLove

You're right, I was off by 1 year for all of the first 3 movies that I mentioned. "Apollo 13" would have been the 3rd year in a row for Tom Hanks.

JAKH

I'm AMAZED that you've never heard of Big. It was such a big hit when it came out, and that seems like yesterday to me.

Scott Howard

I don't remember if I mentioned this during the reaction, but I meant to say that I know the actor has done a lot of work for veterans in the US, which is amazing.

Verowak

A quick note, Forrest Gump was released in 1994 and Apollo 13 in 1995. Sadly the Oscars are not accurate in that those who SHOULD win, don't always win due to popularity or other reasons :(

Verowak

Yes, his perspective is so refreshing! If only people treated others more like Forrest Gump treated others, the world would be a much better place. I love when characters/actors say something, and it ends up happening, like them becoming astronauts 😁

Verowak

It's such a great film and seems like it would be hard to get tired of lol

Verowak

I've seen a lot of people mention "Big", but it's not one that I had heard of before starting this reaction channel.

Verowak

I can see why those years are huge in terms of film!! I've heard of some of those, but less than half that's for sure lol He becomes an astronaut?! I need to read the book now because that makes no sense to me... you can't run in space! 🤣

Verowak

One of those rare movies that makes everyone ugly cry but in the best way possible. I remember one of the original marketing taglines was “you haven’t seen the world until you’ve seen it through the eyes of Forrest Gump.” I think that perfectly sums up this movie. Forrest is so pure and childlike, he provides such a refreshing perspective to a messed up world. Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, and Salley Field are all amazing and the writing & direction are near perfect. One of my favorite parts is Lt. Dan’s quip to Forrest that when Forrest becomes a shrimp boat captain Dan will be an astronaut, the next movie both actors did after this was Apollo 13…

Paul G

Me too! I think I watched a reaction to this like a week ago.

Ashley

I'll always give this one a rewatch, tears everytime too!

Chris

Loved your reaction to this. You need to do "Big" it was a really big break out movie for Tom Hanks and has a bit of Magic in it.

Scott Howard

After his portrayal of "Lt. Dan", Gary Sinise has done tremendous work for veteran's causes over the last 30 years, including building and renovating accessible homes for veterans through the charitable Wounded Warrior Project, USO tours with his "Lt. Dan Band", and hosting Memorial Day and July 4th concerts with Joe Mantegna.

JAKH

Tom Hanks won Best Actor Oscars for good but not great performances in 1992's "Philadelphia" (for PC reasons) and 1993's "Forrest Gump" (awarded for popularity of the movie), but then was denied awards for his really great performances in 1994's "Apollo 13", 1998's "Saving Private Ryan", and 2000's "Castaway" because he had already won twice. His post-traumatic reaction scene at the end of 2013's "Captain Phillips" was one of the best PT portrayals on film, and he wasn't even nominated. Nor for his portrayal of Chesley Sullenberger in 2016's "Sully".

JAKH

Notable films 1939 Wizard of Oz Gone with the wind Stagecoach Mr Smith goes to Washington Hunchback of notre dame Son of Frankenstein Only angels have wings 1994 Pulp fiction Shawshank redemption Leon Ed wood Hoop dreams Natural born killers Forrest Gump Lions king Clerks Speed Fresh, IMHO very underrated And so many more The book Forrest Gump is way different. One thing on the book that doesn't happen in the movie is that Forrest becomes a NASA astronaut and ends up in space.

DarthChef

Oh really? I'll have to check out more movies from 1939 and 1994

Verowak

It’s true that 90’s films have particular taste and feel. And a bit of fun movie info, 1994 is considered by many to be the second greatest year in film history, after 1939.
