Face/Off (1997) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

My second John Woo movie, and it was what I expected and MORE!

I am so glad that I finally watched this, I should listen to past Vero and the movies that she was interested in watching because she knows me very well it seems ๐Ÿ˜‚

I have to say, the acting for this movie was really good. They did so damn well, it's not often that you have to portray different characters in the same movie, and I can imagine how stressful it would be to share a character with someone.

I really hope you all enjoy it, if you have a VPN, this movie is available on YouTube in the USA (free with ads).

This movie had action, heartfelt moments, psychological ridiculousness, some comedy... it has everything!!

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

This was my first long reaction after being sick and I noticed that I coughed quite a lot. It's getting better by the day at least now!

I will just add Castor and Pollux are also the names of the Avoxs in the 3rd Hunger Games book. On the propaganda team for Katniss as the camera people. You learn more about them in the book that you read so I will stop cause I know you know. Those names are also used in many other works.

Daniel Looney

I prefer the French translation of castor ๐Ÿคฃ

Verowak

There are definitely some filmmakers who do things a bit differently and it just stands out, so others will be influenced by them. I didn't know John Woo was that big of a name/game changer though! Even more amazing is the impact it has on society, like people liking the fashion/accessories and buying them out :D

Verowak

So glad you healthy again! I do not care for this movie but JAKH is correct. I thought the same thing,

Daniel Looney

I thought someone else would mention this, but no. You made a comment about the names early in the movie: Castor and Pollux are heteropaternal fraternal twin brothers from Greek myth. They were asshats back then too, kidnapping and violating their cousins' fiancees. In astronomy, Castor and Pollux are the brightest stars in the constellation Gemini. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castor_and_Pollux

an article writes, "...there's a reason why all the youths of Hong Kong are wearing dark trench coats and sunglasses." It's because of Chow Yun Fat in the film "A Better Tomorrow." The breakout film by John Woo. Francois Truffaut might say it's "an event sociological." (lol ๐Ÿ˜„ he says this in Close Encounters of the Third Kind when there was an event that touched the people.)

Mannygogou

ahem... specifically documented, the actor "Chow Yun Fat wore Alain Delon model 707A" sunglasses in the movie. Soon after, "all of Hong Kong was sold out" of them.

Mannygogou

According to the lore... as soon as people watched "A Better Tomorrow" in 1986 everyone started copying the style of the movie. Outfits that they wore were sold out... and did they wear sunglasses?, sold out! lol... ๐Ÿ˜Š

How John Woo changed the face of cinema... Part fiction, part legend, but probably mostly true. All action directors are influenced by John Woo... even if they didn't know it. All action directors are inspired by films they've seen... but John Woo was so influential that film makers who saw his (Hong Kong) work would consciously or subconsciously imitate (or be influenced by) his work. And then later film makers would see this new style of action by others and they are influenced by it... they don't need to know that the ball was started rolling originally by John Woo - who in turn combined Hong Kong style action aesthetics with western style gun play. So it can be refuted... and others may say they've never seen a John Woo movie but the genre was influenced by Woo's early work... so it's tough to see delineations... the lines have been blurred and blurred again.

Mannygogou

Yes, no spoilers - I was trying to say, The term "hard boiled" is about a hard boiled detective. And in the end I came to the conclusion that a "hard boiled detective" is an old-fashioned detective. (Could be untrue). The title is not supposed to be a spoiler, meaning it's intentional to set the stage by the film makers... but yes maybe it could be a spoiler nevertheless.

Mannygogou

I looked up 2 definitions of "hard boiled" and they contradicted themselves a little bit - but it's understood that the origin is about a "hard boiled detective" which is what I wrote about above. Oh wait - one more search result, Hard boiled means to cook an egg solid. So yeah, also a metaphor for "other types of hardening." Also to mean "severe, tough - since 1886". A character who is tough and unsentimental. This makes sense. They are trying to say "a hard boiled detective" is cooked through and through. A detective who everyone bows to, a detective's detective. But... the definitive "detective" character have changed over the years, maybe originally unemotional and analytical... maybe over the years with societal disillusionment of authority figures, the new-age detective becomes uncompromising when facing corruption within the system. The detective becomes cynical. Later the emotional, or quick-to-anger detective may get kudos for being creative in getting around bureaucracy. And then with the rise of the anti-hero we come to the final realization of the modern hard boiled detective. But what they have in common is they're hard to dissuade, hard to shake, hard to lose. Mmm but still, maybe the definition of hard boiled is an "old fashioned detective."

Mannygogou

No spoilers: John Woo's earlier films are from Hong Kong. He was part of the wave of the Hong Kong movie industry that came to the US in the mid 1990's ahead of the turnover of HK to the ChiComs (along with Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Chow Yun Fat, Sammo Hung, etc.). - "Hard Boiled", "The Killer", and "Once A Thief" are all good HK movies with Chow Yun Fat. Also recommend Chow Yun Fat's 1st US movies "The Replacement Killers" w/ Mira Sorvino, Michael Rooker, & Danny Trejo, directed by Antione Fuqua; and "The Corruptor" w/ Mark Wahlberg. - "Paycheck" is based on a book by Phillip K. Dick - "Broken Arrow" is a heist w/ John Travolta & Christian Slater, and music by Hans Zimmer - "Windtalkers" w/ Nicholas Cage is a fictional story about the real life WW2 US Marine Navajo Codetalkers. Music by James Horner.

Yes, YouTube Premium. They share-ads with small businesses and they pay creators. Officially they're doing good even though it messes up sometimes.

Mannygogou

Defining hard boiled, Hard Boiled is (always) about a "hard boiled detective" meaning "tough" ...mmm, maybe when you boil something too much it gets tough? Other definitions of a hard-boiled detective is... tight lipped, gritty, not above doing dirty work, both cynical and emotional at the same time, a high-stakes detective, "may" cross the line. May be violent. An anti-hero so he might not do it by-the-book but with the goal of getting the job done. Won't do it by-the-book but at the same time is uncompromising? How/What? A bundle of contradictions lol. The movie is about the hard-boiled detective "Tequila." Let's finish the hard-boiled traits - cynical yet emotional seems contradictory. It means he might yell at you because you're not cynical enough ๐Ÿ˜† - doesn't like to follow the rules yet is uncompromising, hahaha - he throws away the official rule book but he uses his own moral code book, maybe the official book is too wishy-washy for his taste ๐Ÿ™‚

Mannygogou

We'd quote basically every Nic Cage line. Any time a friend did/made something, I'd respond: "Oh God this is excellent. Bravo. Bra-fucking-vo." We could work just about any Face/Off line into a conversation. Hard Boiled is one of the classic movies Woo made before he entered Hollywood.

James MacDonald

What are some of your favourite quotes from this one? Hard Boiled is seeming more and more like a movie I'll have to check out. I am not looking anything up though, so I won't even know what genre it is (assuming action), when I go in :D

Verowak

I checked IMDB, and MI:2 and Face/Off are the only ones I've seen lol I do want to see Paycheck though, which I didn't know was a John Woo movie. I've seen Hard Boiled mentioned a decent amount, and I'm fully expecting an egg to be in the movie somehow ๐Ÿ˜

Verowak

Oh bugger that sucks! They caught on to it and changed it lol

Verowak

That makes sense, YouTube premium (assuming that's what you have) is worth it to skip all those damn ads! It also actually helps the people you watch too! The value of YT premium is split up among the creators that you watch. So if you watch 1 channel 50% of the time and a different channel 50% of the time, they will each get half of the revenue from your YT premium (after YT takes their cut of course).

Verowak

Can't wait for this. Me and my friends used to quote this constantly. By the way, you should watch John Woo's Hard Boiled.

James MacDonald

Woo! I wonder what other John Woo you've watched? His famous trilogy was A Better Tomorrow (1986), The Killer (1989), Hard Boiled (1992) I usually recommend Hard Boiled as the most normal and epic movie. The bad guy Mad Dog is famous... ๐Ÿ˜ฎ be like OMG it's that dude!

Mannygogou

I went ahead and paid subscription to YT so now I get no ads... LoL since I watch YouTube more than anything else I thought I might as well throw them a bone... also hoped that they would give me some special consideration but no... they do not, lol ๐Ÿ™‚

Mannygogou

Well after leaving that comment I realised itโ€™s been a while since I watched a movie on YouTube, so I figured I should check again to see if it still works the same way. Unfortunately it doesnโ€™t seem to anymore lol. Still worth a shot, but YouTube might have ruined that trick in the last few months.

Razor Bikini

I didn't know that! My adblock automatically blocks all the ads, so I mistakenly assume everyone has adblock ๐Ÿ˜… Thanks for the tip!

Verowak

Will watch this later at some point but a tip for anyone watching this free with ads on YouTube (that may not work on all devices but works on my android tv): if you skip through the video at 10 minute intervals, letting all the ad breaks play up until the end credits, you can then go back to the start of the video and watch the whole movie uninterrupted.
