“A najmbara is a necrophagic parasite often encountered in the eastern bog forests. Invisibly wrapped around trees, they quickly unfold themselves when they feel the vibrations of a prey walking around via the tree itself, and throw themselves at said prey, latching onto them, crushing them with their pliant, sinewy arms and using a fast-acting acid to burn through the fur (or scales) and the upper layers of skin below, while thousand of little hooks are dug inside the flesh.
This is both how they kill and feed, but also how they reproduce, as najmbaras use these hollow hooks to inject thousands of eggs inside their prey’s body, with two possible outcomes:
the victim dies during the attack, and the najmbara eats, and leaves the body where it is to swell with the remaining of its (uneaten) young.
the victim somehow escapes and remains infected, possibly dying somewhere else if not healed fast, and the reproduction is still a success. Eggs hatch en masse after a week. The vast majority don’t survive, but enough do.
What fascinating things ! Can’t wait until I can somehow put enough eggs in stasis to brew a poison.”
