I watched this movie in Japan back then, in real time, but I was just a kid, so I didn't really understand it. During the live-action scenes, I remember getting a sudden jolt, thinking for a moment that our own seats were being shown. My interpretation is that Shinji rejected everyone else and wished to live with Asuka—and that final scene is the result of that. Asuka's awakening and the battle against the Eva series were incredibly thrilling. Even the scenes that were initially too brutal to watch, I've seen so many times now that I've gotten used to them.
