This episode tends to be criticized, but I think it's very creatively done considering the fact that before this episode was aired, they only had 30,000 yen left to spend, no time to sleep at all, and couldn't even print and bind the script for the voice actors.

8:56 By the way, for anyone that's played the game Omori, that image of Shinji may look familiar.

There's a quote by Kierkegaard that I'm always reminded of when he floats in that void of freedom?
It goes; "Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom. "

Congratulations...
Love and hate this scene.
My biggest take away as a viewer for the story (show and movies) overall is that it hits different depending on your state of mind, more so if you are depressed(just existing as is in that state), are dealing with depression(actively working through it), or overcame your depression

Hello, Autosave!
I'm a viewer from Japan.
(I paid for the family plan just to post this.)
First of all, thanks for watching the TV version of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Now that you two are moving on to the film version, I'll give you a spoiler-free meta-talk about the series to serve as a guide for the future.
1. The Collapse of the TV Version
In 1996, during the latter half of the TV series, the Evangelion production studio (Gainax) was in a state of panic. The main cause was that Director Anno, who had become stuck on the script midway through, began poring over psychology books and incorporating those elements into the work. As a result, the simple theme of "Angels vs. Evas: A Problem for the World" shifted to "Psychological Issues: Individual Self-Awareness" for Shinji and the other main characters. This led to script confusion and uncontrollable production. Maintaining the same animation quality as in the first half of the series became difficult, and the final angel/messenger (Kaworu) was hastily produced without sufficient portrayal. In order to meet the broadcast deadline, the final two episodes required "makeshift" solutions such as connecting recycled footage in a montage style or inserting dialogue into still images of hand-drawn sketches. There's a famous anecdote that the script ultimately wasn't ready in time, and the hot, printed version arrived just before the voice actors were about to record their lines. As a result of this confusion, the TV version ended in an unsatisfactory way, known as a "congratulations ending," leaving viewers and sponsors stunned. However, because the series ended with so many mysteries, such as the existence of the angels and the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the protagonist's abuse coincided with the social climate of the 1990s (Japan was in an economic recession, with domestic violence and neglecting children becoming serious issues), the TV version became a huge topic of conversation in Japanese society.
2. Movie Version (Old Movie Version, 2 Films)
In 1997, two films were made to complement the TV series. The first, "Death (True)," added new scenes to a compilation of the TV series. The second, "The End of Evangelion = EOE (Air/Magokoro wo Kimi ni)," featured an alternative ending to the "makeshift" final two episodes of the TV series. The second film, in particular, was produced by Production IG, famous for "Ghost in the Shell," for the first half, and GAINAX for the second half, creating a hybrid feel. Its content was even more impactful than the TV version, and some fans consider it to be the series' masterpiece.
3. Rebuild Version (New Movie Version, 4 Films)
A "Rebuild Version" film series was produced from 2007 to 2021. The first two films, "Jo: Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, 2007" and "Ha: Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, 2009," are essentially compilations of the TV series, but they feature new CGI, new character, and major changes to the setting. The third film, "Q: Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, 2012," took a major turn in the story (making as much of an impact on audiences as EOE), and the final film, "Shin Evangelion: Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, 2021," brings Shinji and his friends' story to a close.
I hope you both enjoy your journey through these six films!

If you want to see more of them at school, there's the normal manga which is the rest of the show, then there's a spin off manga of them in that alternate reality, the manga's name is Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days, and I haven't read all of it but it's super cute.

You have seen the peak ending but now you gotta see at least EoE to put it in context and make it make sense.
I'd like to recommend Code Geass as an anime yall should react to at some point. Thanks for being so real and honest in your reactions. Some of the best first time analysis of Neon Genesis I have seen. I truly enjoyed it

I like how differently you reacted to the episode. Very curious if the same pattern will hold for EoE. I'd like to say more, but I don't want to spoil anything or put any expectations on you, so I'll just say: thank you for being so open and honest with your emotions.

So besides the movie End Of Evangelion. There are 4 other movies that you should watch that are part of what's called the Rebuild of Evangelion.
These no matter what people say, ARE NOT A REMAKE of the tv show even though it might seem that way at first and is the final conclusion to the world of Evangelion.
These films are:
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance
Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.
It's more Eva and will answer quite a few questions that this next movie will give you, but it's entirely up to you guys if you decide to jump into them. I personally think you guys should also watch them given your discussions, don't know if your mod will see this or not.
Others will tell you how they aren't worth watching because they don't like them, but they can just...not watch them if they don't like them lol. But also not trying to force you guys or anything, just think it'd be cool if you guys did give them a shot since right off the bat you'll notice things.
End of the day we're watching for your reactions and not what people in the comments want haha. So whatever happens, happens!

I love how the characters are still themselves in the alternate timeline, Shinji is still a pushover, Asuka is still jelous, Rei is still objectified, and the birds at 12:49. Remember, the movie is just another perspective on the events of the last two episodes of the show, closer to the original plans for the last two episodes, before they realized they didn't have time to animate it. Also 24:40, the original english dub changed it to "my life is worth living here" and when the netflix redub changed it back to the original translation, a lot of people weren't happy, myself included, but I've come around to it in recent years, as more and more change has been happening to me, I find myself believing that I'm someplace I shouldn't be, saying or doing things that I shouldn't, waiting for permission live, and it's been really hard to find a way of granting it to myself, I still haven't.

I think you guys may be a little confused because you also need to watch the movie "The end of Evangelion", since everything that happens in episodes 25 and 26 is technically a representation of the minds of the main characters.

This episode frames existentialism as a kind of inner physiology: homeostasis is the self we try to stabilize, the familiar equilibrium of identity and meaning, while transistasis is the quiet courage to let that balance dissolve and reform. In drifting between the two, the series suggests that existence is not about maintaining a fixed state, but about allowing gentle transitionsโwhere uncertainty is not a threat, but the condition that makes growth possible. There is beauty in realizing that being alive is less about staying intact, and more about continuously, softly rebalancing.
