2025-07-25 17:33:19 +0000 UTCOn Afghanistan, I had thought from your episode on the Massoud assassination that one of the principle reasons for American intervention was initially to protect oil interests across the border in Uzbekistan. Later on, I had also always assumed that the Pentagon wanted to stay there due to the importance of that region to China's Belt and Road Initiative. Are these factors not as important as drug smuggling (for its own end), or is the purpose of the drug smuggling to support activities to achieve other objectives? (since one of the main takeaways I have from your podcast is that the other objectives would probably be operationally achieved by supporting jihadis through drug smuggling)
