The Deep Politics of Scorsese’s ‘Irishman’ (AE207)

Aaron and Max discuss the 2019 Martin Scorsese film, The Irishman. The film stars Robert DeNiro as an Irish-American hitman and Al Pacino as the notorious Teamster president, Jimmy Hoffa. The film is based on the book, I Heard You Paint Houses, by Charles Brandt. We recommend that people watch the film before listening since we don’t attempt to give any organized synopsis, nor do we avoid spoilers. Listen at your own risk!

This is such a deep and thoughtful conversation on this incredible film. Have either of you guys ever seen “The Good Shepherd,” which Deniro directed? The film was modeled on the life of James Angelton. I always felt that Scorsese and Deniro had very deep knowledge or at worst awareness of the deep spiritual rot at the core of the empire, and I think their work reveals more than they even let on.

't have been as simple or naive as the Irishman but he must have been under a lot of pressure.
