In De Niro‘s voiceover, he says something to the effect of “ can you believe it? The Italians all wanted Kennedy, the Irishman, to win the election.” Given that the title of the film itself is the Irishman, I always wondered if the movie was meant to be allegorical about the murder of the president. De Niro‘s character’s only human aspect is his friendship with Hoffa, who is warm, endearing to children, exudes to some extent, a kind of humanity. As opposed to Russell, the mobster who frightens De Niro‘s children and is relatively cold, scary. In murdering his only real friend at the behest of the inhuman, murderous organization, Frank alienate himself from his family and loses his last semblance of humanity. I thought this might be a metaphor for what our country lost in 1963. The movie came out about the same time as Dylan’s song “ murder most foul”, which felt like a synchronicity in the midst of Covid, two artists from the generation that saw Kennedy die lamenting the state our country had fallen into as a result of murdering Kennedy.
