Bakemonogatari 1x6: "Suruga Monkey, Part 1" // Reaction and Discussion

(regarding the discussion portion) we walked out of the room for a minute to get sweatshirts and the camera went out of focus, sorry for the inconvenience.

Bakemonogatari 1x6: "Suruga Monkey, Part 1" // Reaction and Discussion

Comments

Senjougahara is a tsun-tsun pretending to be a tsundere (ironically), who enjoys cosplaying as a yandere to get a rise out of Araragi. The wordplay of Monogatari is so rewarding to look into, the portmanteaus and creative naming (Baru-Hara), the layering of themes and concepts on top of each other...it's wild.

Ruby

I love your reaction to this show! As soon as I discovered your channel I knew this would be the perfect show for you.

Vincenzo

Not that it's always correct, but 95% of the time, Japanese names will sound closer to correct pronunciation if you accent the first syllable rather than the second. So KAN-ba-ru SU-ru-ga, rather than kan-BA-ru su-RU-ga. To increase technical proficiency, you'd need to go into mora timing and pitch patterns to clean up the pronunciation...but as a first step, syllable stress on first syllable is the easiest linguistic lifehack for pronouncing Japanese character names.

I'm really hoping to see these continued after Bake is completed (preferably in novel order). This is one of the best reactions I've seen of the monogatari series and we're only a few episodes in. I'd love to hear their thoughts on later seasons.

aint that srs bro literally its just a anime lmao

REFORMED

I just realized…do 2 of autosave read here?↑🤫 If so…that's like I love them so much...💦 I made a lot of random comments ^^; though, of course, I tried to avoid giving away spoilers. many I commented were... yes, they must be what G-trance says.\(( °ω° ;))/ i...I just think editing is also so well-done.

You've asked in previous episodes about liking Senjougahara or not. I can't say that I am particularry fond of her overall. If we will simply flip her behaviour with Araragi's, it would be abuse, violence and harrassment, but due to "I'm a tsundere" trope she is getting away with it. Can't say this relationship is healthy at all, since Araragi gets constantly threatened, attacked or mocked. Of course we can say that this is "highest difficulty", but really, should we? Every time she insults, physically abuse or mock MC, I just cannot stop thinking about how horrible it would be other way around, so why should this be considered something normal in the first place.

Ortoros

I'm fiending for episode 12 like a crack addict

To answer your question, Anna, yes! Bakemonogatari is a portmanteau of "bakemono" which means "monster" and "monogatari" which means "story". Since the mono part is present in both, they just squeezed them together to make Bakemonogatari (or monstory in English).

KenthalasAT

Yeah, I was thinking the same, so excited for them to get to those parts.

Loayza

6 episodes in, and this is probably the best reaction to this show I've ever seen

DrWomanRespecter

Monogatari is definitely "one of the most things to watch, ever" Ben! haha lmao I'm so glad you guys are loving it

Russell Gambardella

We need their mods to tell them to not skip the ending theme (not the previews, those can be skipped in bake but the ED itself should not be skipped).

dg_2drunk

Mods this really isn't a spoiler so you can tell them. Monogatari means story. And bakemono means monster. The author loves his word play

TheMightyAnt

The name of the show is a play in words. Bake, or Bakemono, is monster and monogatari is story so it can be read as monster story or a more literal translation as "monstory"

Enrique Barloco

Holy f... the discussion, ofc they lack some context from future episodes but they are in ep6 and already mentioned some things that will be adressed like in owari/zoku owari. Love to see it.

Ecodude

Jealousy Rumbles Araragi’s bones crumble this time Anna-ragi and Ben-gougahara’s analysis and understanding was great suruga monkey is simple but not to be overlooked Next time on Auto-mongatari Lilies, Books and Advice

Onemangang2059

Bakemono means monster, monogatari means story. Mash them together and you get bakemonogatari. Just a happy coincidence that it kinda also works in English to make monstory.
