People today don’t realize how taboo atheism was in those days, and Communism was never mentioned without the epithet “atheistic”. Perhaps as a Presbyterian, Dulles was partook of the Calvinist tradition of predestination, in which he was one of the elect— forgiven in advance for any sins he might commit —-the heresy of antinomianism.
