Does Crunchyroll have the Blu-Ray version? Funimation usually switches to the Blu-Ray version when that becomes available and Crunchyroll doesn't. I don't know if that's the case here, but that might be the reason for your issues. But like with any Shaft Anime you should always watch the Blu-Ray version, as they tend to make a lot of changes and corrections.

Did anybody else have weird syncing issues with this episode?
I was watching the version on Crunchyroll, which seems to have the same translation as the Funimation version, since Anna and Ben were reading the same lines...
But every so often I'd notice them reacting to lines and moments that hadn't happened on my end yet, and I have to pause them for a second to catch up. The Crunchyroll version doesn't have the Funimation logo at the beginning, but I matched it to the start of the actual episode, so that shouldn't mater...
Do the two versions play at different speeds for some reason?
ANYWAY, despite all that, I'm super happy for this reaction, can't wait for the rest. Thank you!

The art style used in this series is not everyone's cup of tea. LOADS of symbolism, some minimalism and futurism and surrealism/experimental Russian style for specific plot events.
The extreme difference is art style between regular world and witch world is very interested. If you've ever read classic cosmic horror (Lovecraft) they usually narrate the otherworldly as "colours / creatures that cannot be described and drive you mad", "non-Euclidean architecture" and "names that destroy you if you try to pronounce them". For a 2D character looking at stop-motion collage, it's probably that kind of feeling if our 3D selves were to be put into a horror dimension.
By the way, the series is the inferior medium. It's been reworked into 2 movies with a much bigger budget, better visuals, cut filler etc.

Heard you were reacting to this show and just had to join the patreon because of it. There's never enough Madoka reactions. Best show of the last couple of decades in my opinion.

I swear you are the first people I've seen that actually noticed all the weirdness in the architecture, all the chairs, the creepy ass school. I love your eye for details!

So happy that they're reacting to this! While others have pointed out the artistic and aesthetic influences of Studio Shaft, I'd also like to note that Madoka takes a TON of inspiration--both stylistically and thematically--from Revolutionary Girl Utena, particularly in the use of stylized and surreal environments, another magical girl show that I would literally kill for y'all to react to someday but that's neither here nor there. Regardless, so hyped for this and hope y'all enjoy the wild ride you're about to embark on!

The mixed media-like animation style that comes through is an iconic element of the studio that did this show - SHAFT. They're extremely well known for doing this and they generally have some kind of symbolism behind the art choices and the set designs. I am beyond hopeful that you guys love the choices and the style and pick up on some of how SHAFT uses their style for storytelling - when it's on I think it's some of the best in the industry.

They should consider uploading the main video to patreon on a free tier as well. It can be a bit annyoing to find the video on youtube, then switch over to Patreon for a full-length for the first episodes of a show.
