In Japanese culture spears (yari), bows (yumi) and axes (well, glaives called naginata) were always seen as mere weapons of war, while the sword (katana or tachi) was the samurai's symbol of status as well as a literal part of their soul. Despite swords being mere backup weapons they were given spiritual and cultural significance, being passed down through generations and used for things like duels, executions and rituals more often than war. They also feature in legends more often than any other type of weapon. That is why in manga and anime swords are portrayed more prominently than other tools of war like spears, bows and glaives (naginata).
